Did any of you Guys make the trip up the A1 to (Yarwell?) quarry last weekend?

I did a couple of circuits with the Wife and Toddler, hence driving more cautiously than I might! but they loved the red route descent where the marshall advised "keep on the brakes"

The axle twister sections caused me some problems - my new terrafirma shocks clearly have a lot more travel than any others I've had on the vehicle, so progress was accompanied by an unbelievable amount of twangs and bangs as the springs lifted away (dislocation cones in the pipeline). Also showed up serious play in the transmission!

Anyway, to my point:

I'm not sure what is the best way of driving these sections - keep up the momentum for when the wheels loose contact, or drive a zigzag course so they don't lift off? advice would be appreciated.

As slow as possible, as fast as necessary.

Translated, you would drive the route you choose as slow as possible, ie, choose the route that allows you to drive slowly, however if the best route is straight through and if that requires you to drive faster then you have to do so.

The route that causes least damage to the ground and the vehicle is the best route, bearing in mind time and distance constraints

Bit of a useless answer but my point is it is up to the driver to decide, and that only comes through experience, and that only comes through trying both routes and deciding what's best!!

Ideally one would want to drive the shortest route as quick as possible but as slow as necessary in order to reach one's destination in good time and safely, and this is where increasing the capability of the vehicle comes into it, because you can drive straight through the axle twister nice and slowly as opposed to having to drive quickly through it or having to drive around it!

That's kind of what I thought. In green lane use I'd undoubtedly choose the least damaging route, but at an event like this I can afford to get stuck or waste time losing traction.

The off road course at Peterborough was a waste of time the red route had 1 good descent and a 1 good short deep section of water other than that uninteresting. Considering how big the site is they could have made it a lot more technical/testing ....

I didn't bother with the off road course this year, last time was so **** easy it wasn't worth the effort or money. The show took me all day to get round anyway. Cross axle section means nothing to my Landy, Detriot in the back sees to that.

I saw a freelander making its way round without any difficulty (not red route though), I guess that about sums up the course.

I saw a bog standard suzuki jimny on road tyres doing the course. Even did the axle twister part at the start which was red route I think. Did leave me wondering why I'd paid to go round the course, but couldn't resist! Won't bother again
