hi guys can I have your experienced opinions on this noise?
4.2efi 1994. It has developed an irregular rattle when idling, it isn't a rhythmic tap, tap, tap, or knock but more of an irregular rattle, a few seconds it is quiet then a rattle. I went on YouTube and put in, 'rover v8 rattle' there is a short video of someone who has exactly the same noise if you listen carefully through the usually valve train noise there is a rattle like there is something loose, I've asked the person who posted the video but they haven't got back to me yet. Any ideas anyone please?!

Is something loose.
Check exhaust first, from front to back.

I suspect rattling cats or loose exhaust clamp

Thanks for replies guys, it doesn't sound like an external rattle, the word rattle may be a bit misleading, more like a heavy grinding click every few seconds almost like a bearing race is faulty or something. It is difficult to describe. I mentioned a video on YouTube, entitled (rover v8 rattle) it's about 1 minute 30 seconds long and is the exact same noise. He has the rocker covers off but you can hear the irregular heavy click noise, sounds like it could be expensive.

hi yes thanks, that's the video! can you hear the irregular noise above the thrash of the valves and rockers, now I Think I have actually isolated the culprit, the power steering pulley bearing! I sprayed some WD40 (I love that stuff) onto the rear of the pulley and all seems to have gone quiet! For now, Could it be that simple, could it really???

i used to be so chilled out until I bought a v8 now I have one eye on the temperature gauge, one on the fuel gauge, and both ears on every clunk, squeak, tap or rattle. I seem to be developing an anxiety disorder!!

It does look devoid of lubricity.
