Hi, I have a 1997 P38 4.6 HSE and the engine is not even turning over, can someone help please?

The check engine light is NOT on.
The key remote locks and unlocks the car no problem.
Ingition turns on and all lights up except check engine
The battery is fully charged
There are no blown fuses
Battery terminals are clean
Not even a click at the starter.

I am having trouble with my LPG system so was working on the car. I went to start it and the engine turned over but didn't fire up so I switched it off and tried again, same thing, it turned over but didn't start. I turned it off again and when I went to start it again it wouldn't even turn over and that's where I am right now.

From reading some posts there are various suggestions but is is possible it needs re-syncing?

I live in South Lanarkshire, Scotland.

I don't have a volt meter so would need to find someone with one or go and buy one. :(

What should this tell me?

From what i've read the car won't start if the check engine light isn't working, is this correct? It has been working because I remember seeing it.

The volt meter would tell you if the voltage is dropping under load to a level that confuses the ECU's.
As the engine check light does not come on it could be loss of sync, again it can be caused by low battery voltage.
If it's loss of sync, you need diagnostics such as a Nanocom EVO or a syncmate.

Just went out to the car to make sure the key fob was synced......trying anything.

The remote button unlocks and locks the car but now when I try to unlock or lock it with the keys it's not working and I know it worked ok recently.

Does this have anything to do with the not turning over or starting problems?

I had the same and finally started today by finding sum usefull info this may be worth a try ...........open the door and bonnet disconnect the battery (making sure door remains open at all times ) when battery disconnected insert key in to ign to position 2 reconnect battery and start (hopefully ) mine has engine disabled for 2 weeks and werent able to lock or unlock with keys unti i found this info gd luck hope it works sara x

No luck there, I have tried that exactly as you said and it didn't work. After I did it the remote wouldn't even work but I put the key back in the ignition and turned it on and off again and at least the remote is working.

Still not turning over and not working with the key in the lock either.

Thanks for your advise though.....i'm willing to try anything.

its frustrating it took me 3 attempts my keys wouldnt work then they worked then eventually fired up thank god !!!!

Double check battery, battery connections and the connections to the starter motor and fuse box. All these points are a common cause of problems.

I cleaned the battery and starter terminals about a month ago when I was doing some other work to it so they should still be clean but i'll do them again to be on the safe side.

Thanks again

If it is 1997 ,then it is a GEMS and if the engine check light does not illuminate, then it is highly likely the BECM has lost sync with the engine ECM.

Hi, I have cleaned all the terminals as instructed but it's still the same.

It is definitely a GEMS and the check engine light is not on so I agree that it's probably lost sync.

I will probably just buy a Sync mate in the morning and post the results.

Thanks to everyone for their input, it is much appreciated.

Have you tried tapping the starter just to make sure its not sticking, or tested it to make sure its not burnt out. just a thought

Does the Drivers Door lock when used in the door?? if it does but the others dont' the door Lock Microswitch is knackered in the door latch mech.

If it doesn't even lock on the key - the key barrel is knackered....

Are you getting any messages on the Message Display like 'ENGINE DIASBLED' - 'PRESS REMOTE' - 'KEYCODE LOCKOUT' or anything like that???

With a knackered drivers door lock, you won't be able to enter the EKA code to remobilise the car if the fobs start failing to work....

I would thnk it could be a re-sync of the BeCM to the Engine ECU issue - if you are not getting any messages up on the display....

Tapping the starter was the first thing I tried and I have a spoare one which I will maybe try but I don't think that is the problem.

None of the doors are locking with the key but they all lock with the remote. The key was working fine until the car stopped turning over, that's why i wondered if they were connected. Not too worried about the key right now unless it has something to do with the car not starting.

There are no messages on the dash like you suggest and I think it nees a re-sync as well.
