hi all
i have a freelander 2 ltr series 1 diesel today i replaced the master and slave clutch cylinder and also fitted a new battery as she has struggled to start in these cold mornings, after putting her back together i started her up ok , i then took her for a spin around the block to test that the repair had worked, all good so far, parked up outside my house switched her off and then immediately tried to restart her but no start.
tried to start her a couple of times still no joy, resyncd my keyfob and retried, tested all fuses none blown all lights on the dash as should be ,when i disconnected battery again and reconnected the rear tailgate window had opened as it did the first time its almost as if the engine is imobilised any ideas plz

What engine?
What year?
What mileage?
Do you mean the starter turns the engine over, but it doesn't start up?
Or are you getting nothing at all - starter doesn't turn the engine over?
Can you hear the fuel pump running?

its a 2 ltre diesel v reg with 140,000m on the clock with the old battery on it would turn over but not start ive fitted a new battery fri , it started went round the block stopped and now nothing the starter wont turn i can hear a click which i presume is the fuel pump but nothing else as mentioned its like the engine is imobilised

No - the pump should be a whirring or buzzing sound.

A click is the starter not getting enough power.

Do the dash lights dim when you turn the key?

Is this a new battery or just a different battery - is it fully charged? Perhaps the one start was all it was fit for. Check the voltage.

its a brand new battery (avon battery 096) the dash lights are bright and come on and go off as they should,no dimming of the headlights as i turned the key,the click comes from the back end.i think i may have disturbed something when fitting the clutch master and slave cylinder as its a bitch of a run (first time ive worked on a landy ) think i will deconstruct what ive done and have a good poke around see what i can find

starter wires terminals etc? mine was problamatic a while back wheree sometimes she was just dead it turned out to be the starter wire terminals that needed replacing you can check by running another wire from it to battery...
 
I did bump start it ok and it run up but again when switched the ignition off it would not start finally got it sorted with the help of the friendly rac it was the starter motor afterall the wife has got the knack of it now with the help of her umbella and a few good whacks in the right place the next question is , is changing the starter motor easy to get at and change and do you guys recommed a fair place to get a new one, many thanks for the help and replies so far
 
If it starts after a good bang on the starter motor, the brushes are probably worn and are not making good contact on the commutator. A smart bash's vibration can normally overcome this, but very temporarily.

If it is this, changing the brushes is the solution.
 
I'd be very tempted to check the teminals are tight on the battery matey........
If youv'e had them off to change the battery, they are notorius for not tightening up fully and causing a bad connection. I would take them off give em a clean then re fit,if they don't tighten up fully I use a split pin knocked down the side of the terminal to take up the excess. Worth a try common fault and easy remedy! :)
