My P38 is very noisy on start up when cold. Sounds as though exhaust has completely blown.
After about 20 seconds it quite a down then drives OK. When warm it starts OK I.e. no excessive noise.

It's a 4.0 petrol, 2001 model.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

Welcome to diesel ownership and cold weather starts, and give it 5 minutes to warm up a bit before you drive it

Loose Exhaust Manifold or dodgy gaskets....when it warms, the metal expands enough to re-seal....even within 20 Seconds...

Or Tappets pumping up!

Cracked manifold.
+1 on the cracked manifold. Take the heat shield off and you should be able ,maybe ,to see a thin black line, thats the bugger.
The manifold usually expands enough when hot to seal the crack enough to stop the blow ;)

Got the heat shield off the drivers side. A right b-----d of a job.
Had to burn a couple of bolts out.

The manifold is blowing. Slightly on the last joint which quickly seals when warm. More so on the "concertina" section.

Where is the best place to get a replacement?

Cheers
