Hi all,
I am new to the Freelander, had a Pajero & Scooby before......should the Freelander be noisy when driving......not from the engine/gear change etc as these are smooth & quiet, but when i set off in the morning the Freelander seems noisy then after about 10mins it gets a bit quieter???

Is it cause its 4 wheel drive that makes it more noisier than say a 'normal' car?

Any help much appreciated......

Hi,
It had just passed its MOT before i bought it.....the only thing the mechanic said that may need changed is the 'Viscous' bearing.....could this be the cause?

No, i will try & look "moro......what specif. should i look for......is this a really expensive problem!!!!?
 
it depends what yu find - first check is...... are they there?

if it is all there - then do the superb vcu check in the FAQ section, then we can check the bearings.

God that sounds ominous.........will look 2moro.....how many props/vcus should be there....sorry i am a bit vague on this.......
 
no its not ominous, but lets check the obvoius most expensive bits first. when happy with that, then move on.

prop from gearbox to vcu (and bearings) and then prop to rear diff. Some unscrupulous peeps remove em to hide other faults.
 
Falken tyres all round, fairly new.......bit of a coincidence the Viscous was mentioned to me ....i was told they cost around £80 pound mark.....the noise doesnt totally go away after 10mins, just gets a bit quieter.....i thought it could be some sort of bearing as this would get a bit quieter once more heat is generated....
 
After a run , get under the car and feel the VCU unit ( middle of prop shafts ) if its very hot you have a problem , ignore this at your wallets peril !
 
The mechanic did say viscous bearing or actual VCU! Bearings are indeed around the £80-90 mark and are easy enough to fit! It might be an idea to remove rear propshaft and go for a quick drive! If the noise has gone, then at least you have identified the area of concern!
 
The bearings are the VCU support bearings and are prone to failure especially the front one. Make sure the replacements are not cheapo auction site rubbish as they fail very quickly.
 
If either of the bearings on either side of the VCU were worn.....would this be enough to cause the noise?
Had a look under the car this morning & glad to say there are NO missing shafts etc!!!!!!!

Would it be best to change BOTH of the bearings at once......if not buying from ebay would a Motor Factors be suffice or can anyone recommend someone else?

Think i will change them 1st & if this does not cure it then i know its the actual unit that needs replaced......

The bearings come complete with the rubber mountings, do a search on the forum as other members have fitted other premium bearings rather than pay LR prices. Best to take the complete drive train off rather than let the props hang down, again a search on the forum will show you how. No point in only changing one being as you've already taken the VCU off.
 
If you go to a LandRover dealer for original VCU mounting bearings they will supply you with a nice LR box inside which you will find a mount made by GKN fitted with a FAG (top quality) bearing. Cost £80 each.

If you go to Parts & Accessories for Landrover & all 4x4: Freelander, Drive Line (General)

you will get exactly the same thing GKN + FAG but in a GKN box. Cost £27 a pair.

Thanks for that, will order a pair.......just back from a long run & as soon as i parked up, slid underneath to feel if the Viscouse Unit was indeed hot.....very glad to say that it is not hot at all.....thank god!!!!!

Will order a set of bearings....hopefully this is the problem.....

Not hot at all? :(. That mean's it might be siezed :(.
Do the vcu testing in the FAQ section to check it. Si not drive it more that you have to beforehand, otherwise yu might need an IRD as well. Vcu's work by the increase in temperature altering the the viscosity of the fluid. Read the FAQ section.
