I Recently bought a 2002 TD4 Freelander and tonight on slowing down through 3rd ,2nd and 1st gears a loud noise comes from the engine bay, a real clunking noise. Any ideas what it could be please. It doesn't do it when I accelerate in these gears.

does it sound like its coming from the right hand side of the engine bay?

If so, its probably the rubber engine mount loose where it screws into the chassis.

To check...... take off the undertray and place a jack under the engine with a piece of wood to avoid cracking the sump, jack and support the engine (just take the weight, dont jack it up), remove the big engine cover if it has one, remove the ally engine mount bracket from the drivers side, now try and unscrew the big ruber mount from the chassis by hand, if you can then its loose and is the cause of your noise, there is a special tool to tighten it but you can do it with a hammer and a pry bar, tighten the mount by tapping it round with the hammer and pry bar then reassemble the bits you took off.

Thanks for your reply clutchdust. Yes it does seem to be coming from the right hand side (drivers) so I'll have a go at what you said and let you know how I get on. The noise is also happening more loudly when I reverse which I found out later on after my initial post.

I used the car this morning and the problem was still there, however after 40mins or so the rattle/grind/vibration (hard to describe sound) disappeared as if something had warmed up. I then thought possibly it's a gearbox realated problem. Then tonight coming in to work I had no problems until I got to the speed bumps at work. I travelled up and down all 3 bumps very slowly accelerated away and the noise had returned making me think it's got something to with the suspension. Any ideas would be greatly accepted ?

My car is 2.0 td4 GS 2004 with 50k on it.
