thats it boys what do you recon? just been to see it but dont want to jump in to it befor i am sure no welding needed been done and a good job too boot. guy is fed up now he cant get it running and dont want to make a offer befor i know what couod be up with it..

Could be as simple as the rotor arm tracking down to earth (Common fault).
To check this, and the HT output, unclip the dizzy cap and place aside, pull the HT lead from the coil out of the dizzy cap. Hold the end of the HT lead with a pair of WELL INSULATED pliers about 5mm above the brass wiper on the rotor arm and get someone to crank the engine over.
If a spark jumps across to the rotor arm, the arm is crap and should be replaced with a genuine Lucas, if there is no spark, check that the HT voltage s being produced by holding the lead about 5-6mm from a metal part of the engine...you should get a healthy spark, if not then either the coil, HT lead(s) or the distributor sensor which replaces the old fashioned points, could be shot.
If you are getting a good spark at the HT lead from the engine and not across the rotor, then the rotor is o.k. and you need to be looking at the HT leads or maybe even the orientation of the leads on the dizzy cap (Firing order).
There are none of the fancy crank sensors etc. on the Classic and the Ignition side of things is pretty straightforward compared to the P38, V8.
One other thing...the 3.9 is susceptable to block problems the same as the 4.0 and 4.6 engines fitted to the P38 so check the coolant and inside of the rocker covers for "Milk"
Must say that my old Classic, after replacing the engine, was far better than the P38 that replaced it...wish I had kept it !!!
