Hi. On a road trip in Lake District and Scotland. Car drives amazing on the main drag, but going up steep hills she has no power and have to go down to 1st or 2nd gear. Is this the turbo or something as simple as a split hose? I don't get the kick that I used to get. Any others ideas? I don't think it's the fuel pump, just had an oil service and changed the air filter. Car revs fine, no temp spikes, no blue smoke, no oil loss or coolant loss and the car is still returning the same fuel consumption. I have noticed many refer to the waste gate modulator, but I have no idea what that is!!! I need done education here!!
 
then IMO start with the simple things, clean the EGR(or better get rid of it), as you have it clean the MAP sensor cos i'm sure it's full of muck, get rid of the CAT... in 12 years it got clogged enough to make you trouble... as long as these are not ruled out it's hard to diagnose further
 
Thanks. That was kind of my plan! On top of having to identify my leak (virtually my whole roof is taped) and replacing my height sensor, I'll have a busy few weekends ahead!!
 
i dunno about UK MOT, what i know is that a 12 years old one might make you trouble, dont forget to disconnect battery before you unplug the height sensor

Hi Sean, it's Dave here. Start with the simple stuff:

1. Clean the MAP sensor on the inlet manifold. I use aerosol brake and clutch cleaner, available just about anywhere. The 2 bolts holding it in place are 8mm iirc.

2. Ditto with the MAF. Also check performance with and without the MAF connected. If there is no difference or if it's better disconnected then your MAF is bûggered. I always buy the Ebay cheapies and they work fine for me.

3. Check for internally de-laminating rubber turbo hoses, especially the elbow on the bottom of the turbo.

4. Re the De-cat exhaust downpipe. Diesels only get tested on the mot for smoke output, so the fact that the 'act' is no longer there shouldn't be a problem. Just keep the original pipe "just in cases"

After you've done that lot, come back and report on progress.

Well, I took a look at both the MAF and MAP sensors today- the MAP was heavily caked in black crap, so gave it a good clean with WD40. The MAF appeared ok, but gave it a spray at let dry. I did notice a bit of blow-back residue in the air intake that joins the MAF to the turbo, so washed that out. Didn't have the inclination to take off the hoses to check, but suspect I should change anyways as they look pretty tired. But I did notice a lot of black gunk around the EGR, not really sure how to get that off to clean as the bolts are quite difficult to get to. Any tips?

So, anyways, I took her for a spin: much better. More responsive, seemed to like hills again (although not sure if it is coincidence, maybe need a cold day).
