Hi. I tried to select low gears on my P38 last week and nothing happened (was working fine previously) The light on the switch just flashes and low gears are not selected. I checked underneath today to see if all connections were good on plugs etc and all looked fine. I did notice however that the motor on top of the gearbox was clicking, just like a starter motor does when a battery is quite flat. Does it sound like a low gear motor problem or bad earth ?

If the motor is clicking, it's probably stuck. Take it off, open it up, and i bet you'll find chips of magnet inside. Clean out thoroughly and reassemble. You can test operation with a 12v battery directly to the connector, two fat pins are 12v positive and negative. For a direction change, just switch the polarity.
