Hi all,
After having a good look under my series 3 i have found that the cross member under the bell housing has taken an almighty clout at some point before i got it and i believe has shifted up therefore making the prop shaft foul when the suspension hangs, knackering it up. I have a new propshaft but don't think it is wise to put it on till i have replaced the cross member which i don't have time or money to do at the mo. So the real question is can i take the front prop off, chuck it in 4 wheel drive and crack on for the meantime without fear of anything else going bad? I have free wheeling hubs on the front if this makes any difference.

all having no front prop will do is mean you will not get drive to the front axle

you can still use high and low ratios as per normal
 
Just keep it in 2wd with the front prop off as 2wd only drives the rear wheels anyway. Won't really matter what you do with the FWH hubs, but just as well let them run in freewheel mode as no chance of engaging 4wd without the prop (if you are going to leave it like this for an extended period of time though, remember to run the FWH hubs every so often to keep them lubricated)
 
Series 3 is rear wheel drive anyway so shouldn't really matter if you keep it in 2 wheel drive. Apparently running without a front propshaft reduces fuel consumption (don't know how true that is but its what I've heard)
 
i run my 109 in both high and low ratio whilst only driving the rear wheels, been laning across Strata Florida and up around Soar Y Mynydd like this without any problems

didn't really have much choice as i have different ratio diff in the rear axle to the front axle so i just leave my FWHs in 2x4 at all times, a tub full of firewood assisted with traction where i needed it

i've not broke anything because of this yet
 
Could overload your rear halfshafts if you try anything strenuous in low range, which is why low range forces you to have 4wd. Just something to think about.
