Lockheed type system ,had to replace various hoses during n/s front wing replacement which led to much bleeding .Both brakes and myself .The last time I used a Gunson easy bleed with spare tyre air pressure...having not used one for 20 plus years I forgot about the over pressure thing ...i.e : its not good to use over 20psi as it may damage master cylinder seals .

Anyway ,the vehicle was last bled about 2 months back and has been standing since .The brakes were acceptable whenlast moved .I put this down to the fact that the vacuum system is faulty (see my other post) .

So went to move it yesterday and the brake pedal ,with some resistance went right to floor and returned slowly to its rest position .Some fluid was blown out of the top of the reservoir but I could not find any leaks elsewhere .

Im guessing that a master cyl rebuild kit would be a good start .Does anyone have any experience or advice on this one ? Advance thanks guys

It's a fairly easy change, sounds like the seals are screwed

new master cyl on way from paddocks...funny how the lockheed one for SIII are half the price

fitted new master cylinder and bled out old fluid ,air and new fluid and the problems the same....bugger .
pedal feels firm until engine started when the pedal travels right to floor with no resistance...no visible fluid leaks .
So ,faulty new master cyl ? problem with servo end seal ? Not losing fluid though
Any ideas ?

Air still in system ??
Get someone to work the brake pedal and look at each corner and see if anything is moving on each press ie piston coming out and returning on each press. It should come out and stay. Guessing an 87 is discs all round. Visual check on all flexis while working the pedal to see if any are expanding.

T'aint .4 litres bled through today . Suspect bulging hose somewhere but working alone its hard to tell .But thanks .

Have you got any brake pipe clamps, if not a gentle! Use of mole grips with some padding.
Clamp off all the flexies, 2 on each front wheel, 1 to the rear axle.
Isolates everything and allows each to be released in turn until fault found

thanks for the patience and input guys ,sorted now ,combination of internal damage to flexi hose and pinhole seepage from steel pipe on front caliper into paint and waxoyl buildup -found by process of elimination and bleeding from furthest point repeatedly....eight ,yes 8 ,litres of fluid later...
....and yes , its my hat on the menu tonight as it was ,after all ,at least partly ,air . I still enjoy engineering and welding after a lifetime of it (god knows why) but brakes I hate .Hydraulics particularly .
