After the poor weather at LZ10 (but great weekend) we took two of our engines to Lady McAlpine's birthday charity event at Fawley neat Henley on Thames.

Lovely weather, organisation was a trifle chaotic, but all the machinery worked well, Philip towed the Ruston 1YB dynamometer set on our four-wheel trailer behind his refurbed D2 V8, and I took the Ruston 1XHR in the back of the big trailer.

Hell of a place to get to, I've never taken anything as big as our trailer down such small roads as we did on Thursday. Came off the M40 at J5 Stokenchurch then went down through Ibstone before the roads went to gravel tracks almost. Came back through Marlow.

Very interesting photo's. Sounds like a fantastic hobby! (That's if it is a hobby)

Yes, it is a hobby, we go to Holland in June for the Nuenen 26th Engine Show, both of the Rustons will be going. Then we leave the engines and the small trailer and drive down to the south of France for a week or so, collecting the engines on the way back.

All the big diesel engine makers packed in years ago, right up to Mirrless etc.

When we were the only country producing the stuff we had a captive market, but cheap labour markets and the moving to the Far East of medium to small shipbuilding killed it off.

The Valenta was old school, as was the Deltic, both needed major revamps and there was no money for it.

Sad though and the latest MAN engine made in France is really an RK280
