Got a couple of problems with my Y reg Freelander. Think possibly both are connected, but wanted some expert advice!

1) The Freelander is our second car so can sit up to a week without being used. If I use it a couple of days in a row, it's ok. If I leave it a week, it won't budge unless I give I give it a good rev in reverse and let the clutch out. There are then 4 loud bangs as (I'm guessing) the 4 wheels come free.

My first guess (with my limited car knowledge) was the brakes sticking on, but I have left the handbrake off and in gear and still had the same problem.

2) When turning with full lock on, the car stops. If I give it some revs, it will turn, but if I let it roll, it will come to a stop.

Guessing something to do with the drive train (again, I don't know alot about cars) some any advice would be great!

Cheers

@2 Failed VCU. (Viscous coupling - a pricey thing between propshafts, delivers torque to rear wheels)

next time you park it take your foot of the brakes then move it a few feet, then without touching the brakes switch it of leave it for however much time you can ie the week then try moving it, this should make sure there is no contact between the brake pads and discs so shouldn't stick,
on point 2 would say VCU as well, search the forum for loads of info on this
oh and be a good boy and pop over to the introduce your self section, its considered polite to do so before asking for help

my wife's does it and so when it is in her garage she does not put the hand brake on but since renewing the brake shoes it does not do it at all, but she does not want to chance it .It is usually the brake dust in dry weather is set like concrete with the slightest damp best to jet wash the hubs every week.

The bond can be strong between ferodo type material and steel. I had a Mk1 Lotus Cortina and the clutch friction plate used to "bond" to the flywheel after a few weeks of sitting. I used have to back the gearbox out of the first first motion shaft bearing and move it up and down to bloody well free it. Not even "bumping it" would shift the damned thing !
