Hello to one and all, today I purchased a Landrover Discovery and have to say I am very pleased with it. I have a question though, hopefully this doesn’t sound too stupid. Infront of the gear stick is the control lever for what I am assuming is the 4 wheel drive, it has the symbols H / N / L , I am assuming this stands for HIGH, NEUTRAL & LOW. I would love some clarification on what each one does and what one should the lever be in and in what situation and what its function would be. Lastly is one of the settings more fuel economical to drive in? I apologise if I am asking stupid questions but I just have to know.

Thank you in advance!! :)

Welcome.

H...high ratio...normal driving
N....neutral....going nowhere
L...low...for very difficult terrain where grip would be lost with increased speed

Search function will reveal all. It might be worth asking a friend who has 4x4 to show you a bit before you go off tarmac to prevent problems. Plenty of advice on here

H = High Range (normal driving conditions)
N = Neutral (does what it says on the tin - no drive)
L = Low Range (off road driving - max speed 30mph)

You'll need to be in neutral before you select any of the above whether you have an auto or a manual box.

The H/L gearstick will also slide over to the left in either range. This locks the diff (an amber axel warning light should illuminate on the dials) and should only be needed in severe off road conditions.

As mentioned, do a lot of searching on here. Sounds like you have a lot to learn about your Discovery.
