I've learned over the years that rubbishing others opinions is very shortsighted and arrogant:eek: - even if you choose to ignore or not accept someones opinion, they've gone to the trouble of offering advice so its not necessary to be obnoxious.

And anyway, I certainly believe there is a big difference in the Rangie's performance depending on the fuel used - I've proved it to myself with my own Rangie and would never consider rubbish supermarket fuel (or Jet) - I only ever fill the Rangie with BP Ultimate or Shell's version thereof. Touch wood, 136 000 miles later, my Rangie runs smoothly and with great power......I'm all for trying the most obvious (and cheapest) fixes before rushing off to dismantle the car:eek::eek:

Good luck in diagnosing the problem and I hope it wasn't a known problem the seller dumped on you:eek:

The first place to look is at the air filter and then collapsing air inlet pipes. There is a history of pipes delaminating causing constrictions. Dirty air filters causes the negative pressure to begin the delaminating process.

As posted by Gemsdad (I think :) ) earlier black smoke on acceleration in a diesel is a sign of more fuel being injected than there is air to burn so you have to start there. There was a thread here a few days back on some of the same symptoms without the cutting out I think.

Your car has 200k on it, I hope you didn't pay too much or have too high an expecation of what you're getting into. If you didn't buy with your well eyes open then you're about to get your wallet well opened and a life experience thrown in. A high mile P38 is not for the faint hearted or ill prepared.

Honestly, all this talk of fuel is such BS it's unreal. You really do have to becareful who you choose to listen to on forums.

You may as well go and ask your granny and see what she recommends.

Start with easy stuff, new fuel filter and leak off pipes. Get the fuel pump checked.

The seller may well know what the problem is!

Reading this thread I was thinking the same as Simon1975, blaming poor quality fuel on a 200k car struck me as re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

I'll have to remember in the future that criticising people's opinions is forbidden, but criticising people who criticise other people's opinions is allowed. Catch 22 indeed.

It's a forum, a discussion board, everyone is free to say what the hell they like. I stand by all my comments.
