Disco ES 2001 2.5 TD5 - SLS Problems

I'm new to the Landy Zone, and certainly new to the workings of SLS on my TD5 ES. So I hope someone can help, please. The problems with the SLS is slowly sending me nuts.

I've looked at previous postings on SLS problems but none seem to have a similar problem to mine, so here goes.

Had the vehicle 3 years with no problems - fantastic machine. Last year had the air springs changed because NS would drop over 2/3 days, since then the vehicle was fine. From about xmas the SLS has had various minor problems, example: Compressor started to vent off - well it sounded like it was the copressor! Checked air springs, checked all piping, checked compressor for leaks, but found none - venting stopped of its own accord. Now SLS has dropped about 1.5 to 2 inches (vehicle nose up) but not right down to bump stops, and now stays at this level. If I load my trailer onto the vehicle, the SLS does not move but the Compressor (I'm assuming its the compressor or is it some motorised valve ??) hums, and then stops. If I remove the trailier or any load from the vehicle the same humming starts, and then stops yet the level never changes.

Anyone got an answer?

Many thanks in desperation

Charlie

Sounds like yer SLS sensors aren't talking properly to the compressor . . the're not that expensive to replace.

Just a thought, when you had the air springs replaced, but you get the ride height calibrated properly (needs a LR dealer with Testbook 4) ??

Disco steve,

Thanks for the help. No there was no calibration done.

Calibration: It's almost as if the ride height remains static because the vehicle's management system (ECU ??) has set the required height, thats why it never sinks to the bump stops. Even if I try to adjust the ride height with the manual adjustment, the compressor?? runs but the height never changes. I'll get the calibration checked.

Many thanks

Charlie

maybe your compressor is not pumping with enough air pressure to raise the car, could be your compressor itself is on the way out?

do you have a key fob to lower it for your trailer?
does it rise properly in it's off road setting?

The SLS is really quite simple, the ride height is set during calibration. (factory/stealer)
Any deviation in the height on either side is adjusted by inflating or deflating the bag/s in accordance to the feedback of the ride sensors.
The SLABS ECU controls the valve block releasing or passing air from the compressor. The compressor kicks in if either side or both need to be raised. valves release air if needed.

If both sides of the car react the same way, If the compressor fires and there is no raise in the height, then either there is no air getting through or no air in the first place.

Thanks for the information.

I'm going to LR Dealer to get the Slabs ECU checked for faults code and if necessary recalibrate the ride height.

I tried the manual (dashbord) lift button but the ride height did not change even with the compressor running.

Your comments about the lack of air could be correct. I checked the filter (behind the N/S rear light cluster) and both filters were soaked. I diconnected the filter and then ran the manual lift; there was no air being sucked into the compressor. I haven't checked the pipe (yet) all the way to the compressor for blockage.

Thanks for your help

Charlie
