When I say budget I mean that's why my car is worth that I currently have. I've got a BMW 320d with the wonderful engine that's likely to have a cam chain snap causing 10K worth of damage to the car.

Nice

You could always get the chain replaced to the newer type now incase

There's a lot more that goes wrong on the L322 compared to a 3 series
But if well maintained, they are fine

By the way, the link you posted doesn't seem to work ...

Full service history needs to be verified and depending if its main dealer or Fred in a shed makes all the difference and I would also ask to see receipts for the work mentioned and what warranty you get.
Check suspension goes up and down quickly, check air con, if you can heated screen, headlamp wash wipers

I paid £6k 18 months ago for a 2004 4.4 with 108k on it and then rebuilt the transmission and transfer box and front suspension and rear suspension and a new battery and brakes, air con rad……and and .......

Agree, 320d much cheaper to run than a L322.

However.......when the 322 works.......They are awesome machines :D

i agree l322's are great machines when working but can be expensive when they go wrong,i bought my 2003 v8 just under 2 years ago now for 6k with a known gearbox fault silly i know but i could of spent more and had gearbox fail on me, so far in 2 years the following has gone wrong
gearbox 2.5k to rebuild
radiator
water pump
front brake caliper
engine ecu
front air struts
1x height sensor
suspension calibration today
it's going in tomorrow for pcv valve replacement and all the pipes etc, coolant leak on the back of the engine, and replacing the leaker rocker valve gaskets caused by pcv/
i then have to get front upper & lower suspension arms replaced (garage noticed today when suspension was done)

only advice i can give is make sure you have good service history for the car, but be prepaird because when they go wrong it usually isn't cheap, be ready to get the spanners out and fix what you can yourself. and don't skimp on buying cheap parts it really is false economy in the long run

I bet

I was looking for one that already had the transmission replaced so I knew that I had no worries there, seeing as it was only done in January and has only covered about 200 miles I think I'm safe. Plus the front suspension has been done. But first thing to be changed would be crankcase breather, then EGR.
