Hi guys,
I know what you're gonna say but I really haven't the time to do a search.
Hippo needs new front tyres, rear are very good loads of tread.
Remember reading sometime that new tyres go on rear is this correct ? Have a long motorway run next wk 250miles so don't want to get it wrong. Tyres are 225/55/17

The new tyres must go on the back but, only if they are the exact make and type as those fitted to the front. If you can't get the same type for the rear then it's safer to replace all 4. The Freelander's transmission is very sensitive to tyre fitting with serious damage occurring if the tyres aren't correct.

looking to buy a decent pair of Michelin synchrone 215/65/16s tyres if anyones got any for a reasonable price
don't seems to be able to find any new ones knocking about

I'll warn you, get 4 tyres fitted!!!!
last week was in exactly same boat as you, bought 2 new tyres and had them put on back, and good back tyres moved to front, next day drove down to kent, car felt great, untill we tried going up any incline on the motorway, where it immediately dropped down to 50mph flat out with pedal to the floor????
asked the same question you have just asked, but thought it may be air filter related, checked filter which was black so ordered replacement, but in the meantime went back to shop and had new rears put on, then drove it the same route in kent, fantastic, 70's and 80's uphill and foot only half way to floor, next day added new filter, same route again, 90's up a bloody hill, to say I'm over the moon is an understatement.
but for the extra £££'s, get all tyres replaced and sell the good rears on e bay
 
Hi all I got 4 new tyres from eco tyre southampton for £190 delivered.I have used them in all terains and so far so good get a bit of road noise but not enough to keep turning the stereo up!!!

this shouldn't make any difference at all :confused:

maybe disturbing the air filter to check it made it breath better

so I ve got 2 Michelin synchros on the back and 2 infinity 200 on the front ,all same tread depth is this gonna cause me problems

cant seem to find any new or used Michelin synchros anywhere and im not in a position to buy 4 new tyres the synchros on the rear are like new

so if this is gonna cause me problems with the drive... by removing the propshaft and only being 2 wheel drive will this alleviate any problems??

answers on a postcard please

i've been rotating my rears to the front and fitting new ones to put on the rears, when they've worn, for the last 3 years and not once did it make any difference to the speed or power.

summat else must've affected yours

believe it or not, there was no need to buy another pair of new tyres ;)

The tyres all need to be the same rolling diameter. By running 2wd you can eliminate any possible damage to the drive train.

going away Friday will probably do 500+miles so I don't want to do any damage to the ird/viscous coupling using 2 different makes of tyres on front and rear tho there all the same size

so will remove propshaft seeing as im only doing motorway miles
will refit said shaft when I can afford 4 new tyres all round

unless anyones got a pair of decent Michelin synchros 215/65/16 they want to sell at a reasonable price

You will need to tell your insurance company your changing to 2 wheel drive (mondo mode) when you take your the prop oft. Most don't charge more. They just want to make a note of it.

ok, before fitting any new tyres car drove fine
fitted new on rear, good rears onto front, 50mph flat out (only uphill)

which Is why I first thought filters, as if our motorbikes are not getting enough air, they lack power (I'm no mechanic)

others said it was the different tyres (the old tyres are discontinued) so new ones were slightly different in size by around 20mm give or take

having new tyres fitted to front made the car go back to driving normal

now I understand what your saying you do with your car/tyres, and Im not knocking it, but you cant say there was no need for me to buy 2 more tyres,
what would have been my options?
1, take to a garage and ask them, pay them to change/replace/alter something not tyre related, at the same sort of expense?

2,take advice from here, get 2 new tyres on it, problem solved, sorted,back to normal, Im happy,

it was not the air filter, as once I had 4 new boots on, I drove same route as before when it would only do 50 uphill, and straight away it was pulling 80's uphill with ease.

the only change to the car was TYRES

2 days later adding a clean new air filter, made it drive/feel even better, for £6 I aint moaning

are all your tyres same make size etc?
 
Synchrones are no longer made, being replaced by Latitudes.

As the FL is primarily FWD (approx 80% until front wheels slip) then the fronts are bound to wear more. I replaced all 4 tyres with Pirelli Scoprions when synchrones were ended, and ever since the front has worn quicker and needed replacing sooner. I have placed new on the rear and old from rear to front on the advise from many about how the VCU comes under strain the other way around. No problems reaching motorway speeds either so I'm wondering if your VCU fluid has become 'solid' which would give issues with different rolling diameters?

as much as this forum is good for getting answers, I sometimes think members go to the extremes of looking for "worst" case scenarios,maybe the fluid has become solid, but at this moment in time, with 4 new tyres on it works and goes fine, that's enough for me, I don't worry about the "what if's" until they happen, if in a years time or so the fronts are wearing and need replacing, I'll try the new tyres to rear again, if the problem arises again, then were know you were correct, but in a years time, I will have had 18 months use of a £1,800 car, not bad in my book
 
Cheers guys, can,t afford 4 tyres at the moment so 2 new ones going on rear today with the rears goin to front. Will let you know if any probs.

I've got a synchrone somewhere in the for sale section and on ebay, its practically new if you can find another one
