Hi there,

Just got my first car...a beautiful defender 90...but want to get it rubbed down and re-sprayed from grey to NATO green. Any suggestions? Or should I brave the paint roller?

all depends on how much you paid for it and what condition its in.
if its really nice then leave it alone, or get a pro body shop to do it.

if its shytty then get the hamiltons out.

never change the color unless you really really need to. (imho).

Needs to be done indoors. Spend plenty of time to mask it all, take things like lights off.

Clean the paint work down with alchohol, make sure its completly dirt/oil etc free.

Get primers etc... The colour coat its for looks only, it does not offer the metal any protection.

Get a good spray gun, and build it up slowly.

It is possible to look good. Make sure the paint you use is matt, gloss requires a very good surface to work on, or it shows flaws up a mile.

Thanks guys. It is in really good condition for a B reg and it was a steal at £1500 but the paint work is faded and could do with a freshen up. Any ideas on prices and locations...tried googlerling it and looking in landy mags but no hope

well a pro shop is gonna charge you at least 600 quid for a basic spray, never mind a color change.
you have to ask yourself, do you wanna spend that on a 1500 quid car?

or 20 quid for a gallon of dulux?

lol good point! Do you know where you can get NATO green paint? Not exactually a popular wall colour! Also would it be better to be matt or saturn? So many questions! Thanks

Done mine in NATO sand camo and it came up alright, with a brush and roller. I got the paint from anchor supplies (google it) and they only had that colour in satin (saturn is a planet ) but if you roller it, the finish will be matt.
Another forum member, (pagin) done hers with dulux weathershield by brush and its a fantastic finish.

I have had some great results rollering gloss, it goes on without lines etc, no hairs to come out of the brush etc...

If you do go for gloss, only take out enough paint to do a few panels at a time, reason being, when it starts to set, or thicken up, thats when you start getting some REALLY crappy finnishes.

All this painting talk makes me want to got and paint the steel runner round my tub! But no, its raining AGAIN. Could go and play in the puddles though!
