Hi to all on this forum ,I have just acquired a 98 4.6 p38 automatic with a Bigas multi point lpg system fitted. Now my problem (s) main fault with the car is the transmission will not pull away in any forward gear other than 1st but once your moving you can change up on the stick and once in drive it is fine ,kicks up and down no problem until you stop then you have to repeat the process again ,all a bit tiresome .the other woe is all four AES lights are permanently on on the dash and the display reads an error on start up then goes away ,the car drives fine but it wont adjust on the dash up/down switch.
Also has any one experienced a strong smell of gas when stationary in an lpg vehicle,is it normal or should i be looking for leaks . have previously owned a s11a and rrc 3.5 v8 but with these you only need a welder and big hammer and I don't think either of these will be any use on my new pride and joy !
any ideas or advice will be most appreciated .

You know i think your first port of call would be to seek out someone who will plug you in and see exactly what faults you have that will explain a lot, then you can start to fix them know what's wrong, you shouldn't have any leaks from your LPG at all, I would sort that out as a priority, I know nothing about LPG but it needs looking at quickly flammable gas wafting about in an engine is never a good thing (being explosive and all)

Have your LPG setup checked for leaks:flame2:

Your gearbox issue may well be one of the clutch packs.(possibly A pack)

It sounds as if your RR has been converted to coil springs and no longer has a working EAS

The auto box problem is the sprag clutch failed, James Martin is you man, budget for a gearbox overhaul or replacement.

I think that you've got all the info that you need. If you don't understand LPG then get it to an expert first. If your car explodes it hardly matters if anything else was working at the time!

If you have got airbags on the suspension (don't tell me you bought it without knowing!) then your going to need the software and cable to plug in, read it and sort out faults. DATATEK's your man for that (a damn sight cheaper than ebay) and on his disc you'll get a full workshop manual. Personally I think that buying this should be obligatory for every new P38 owner that comes on here.

So the hammer is definitely out of the question then , thanks for the replies , will have to find an lpg dealer local first to look at leak ,then sort gearbox although is usable as is !

I like a challenge ! so will persevere ,reply to earlier post no, it hasn't been converted to coil springs as I said the car raises and lowers to lower setting and correct ride height all round just not adjustable on the control switch ,ref Datatek software solution ,how do I get in touch / purchase ? anything wrong with software progs from fleabay ??

Cable & software £11 plus P&P CD has the EAS software, Airbag replacement guide and RAVE, you won't get that lot on Ebay:) PM me and I'll send you details.

If all four EAS height lights are permanently illuminated ,then the EAS is in fault mode and will not be raising and lowering.

Have plugged in to the eas system with the eas suite from Datatek and after a bit of trial and error have now got 2 fault codes from the check which are 6/. RR SIGNAL INCORRECT & 7/. VEHICLE HAS MOVED.any ideas please ?

RR signal right rear height sensor

Vehicle has move The eas has adjusted height since ignition last turned off.Can be ignored.

Reset the faults (unlock the EAS) and drive around a bit and then read faults again. If RR signal reoccurs you may have a faulty height sensor or associated connectors/wiring.

Yep, Right rear height sensor on the blink. Try removing and cleaning the connector. Do this with a door or the tailgate open so the EAS does not know what you are doing. Vehicle has moved means nowt and can be ignored.:)

Re the gas smell - it is possible to occasionally get a whiff of LPG, I sometimes get this when I stop at a junction, should go away in a couple of seconds. I think, but do not know, that it is unburnt gas left in the inlet manifold which can legitimately escape from around the injector pipes as they are not a tight fit into the manifold. The tiniest bit of gas absolutely stinks! You will know this as the small escape you get when removing the filler smells terrible... I have had my system tested and there are no leaks, has been like this since new and has now done 40,000 miles. This is on my Subaru by the way.

If you can smell gas all the time, then you have a problem and need to get it checked asap, if it is occasional then probably not a major issue - but getting it serviced by a decent LPG installer is a good idea anyway if you don't know when it was last done, there are filters that get clogged up for a start.

thanks for the replies chaps !, on the gas front I have found a hose clip undone on the accumulator which may have been leaking under pressure but did not show with the soapy water test, have also found an exhaust joint loose and blowing at rear of car so may be this ,will have to road test all faults when I get a chance ,thanks again.

Sounds like you are driving a mobile bomb:flame: Petrol = fire risk:eek: LPG = Explosion risk:flame::flame::eek:
Give me diesel every time:bounce:

RR signal incorrect sounds like a faulty sensor, get under and clean the connector block out, you can test the height sensor with a multimeter
