Hi,

My names J and I got myself a 300tdi defender 110 county a couple of months back and loving it. Have taken it off-road a couple of times with some success but also a good amount of just getting stuck... My question is, it has already had some work done on it such as: Mud tires, lift kit, Heavy duty winch, however, I am still finding myself stuck in the mud more often than not. My budget is fairly low so I'm looking for a way to improve traction without breaking the bank. I have been looking at Ashcroft LSD ATB but am wondering if they are worth the money and the difference they would make? Also are there any other upgrades that would help me more?

Hi J - enjoy the Defender, I'm on my third in 20 years and still enjoy (almost) every second of it.....

Not as a snide comment at all (you'll see all sorts of preferences for set up on here or anywhere Land Rover) I'd worry a lot less about the lift and fancy tyres and get yourself on some off-road driving training. The standard spec Defender will go places you'd never believe, so it might perhaps be technique rather than anything needs adding to the beast itself...?

i fitted a detroit locker in the rear salisbury axle on my 110 it makes a huge difference off road, but I agree you should get more experience as it is first
 
I totally agree, no substitute for experience and have always maintained that a well driven stock vehicle will out perform a poorly driven "tricked up" one.
I have been to sites where my standard height 90 on BFG AT's has trundled around in low 2nd passing owners of "tricked up" machines who were doing shunts, failed hill-climbs, cross-axled, up to the chassis in mud etc. Of course there are times where the standard vehicle is shown to be lacking and you need equipment to get you across or out but they can be a lot less often than you think.
When I started driving LR's all those years ago I was the same and also contrived situations where recovery (by every method available) was practiced but with more experience came the knowledge that most of the time I wouldn't need to put it into practice.

If you can't run to an ARB in the rear (my personal preference if you were to go down that route) then I would instead spend your money on a days tuition, you will find it pays in the long run.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I should mention that all the mod's that are on it were on when I bought it, However I would agree that more practice and experience would be a good idea, I'm just a little worried about the number of times the guys I go off-roading with have to pull me out of the mud :p I don't want to be damaging other peoples equipment just to get me out of something that my lack of experience has caused. But I hear what you are saying, practice makes perfect and I will keep it up, just take it a little easier maybe :p

There's a well used saying. All the gear and no idea. The best upgrade whilst you're learning is a cb, either that or a girlfriend with a short skirt and huge jugs. People with never get bored with coming to your rescue
 
Check ya difflock is working. or go with peeps who aren't into extreme offroading. :rolleyes:

a 2 wheel drive does have limitations. Anything you can do to get drive/power to 3 or 4 wheels at the same time will be a improvement
 
There used to be a load of Landy clubs around which held local trials.

As the whole point of these was to get as far round the course as possible whilst staying within the cane markers.

Learning and competing in these is not only a fun way to spend the day/weekend, there were always people on hand to share their experiences with you.

If you can find one local to you, I would recommend starting at the RTV (Road Trim or standard with no modifications) level and working your way up from there.

When I started out there were quite a few who let me drive theirs, but I am going back over 40 years!

I'm sure that some of the Trials are still around.
 
Thanks for all the replies guys, all the advice much appreciated. Will keep it up and try to stay away from all the big mud holes :) Will check my Diff Lock out but I'm 99% sure its all working as it should, I don't think its a mechanical fault, just a driver one :)
