Hi all!
Getting my first ever 4x4 very soon.
It's a 1996 discovery

Basically need it for towing horses around for the misis.
But I want to use it aswell for what it's ment for and do abit of greenlanning.
It's totally standard atm.
What are these cars capable of in standard form,
Or is there some basic mods to do which will make a diffrence.

Thanks to anyone who reads this and replys. Any help appreciated.

The Discovery is a very capable vehicle as it stands.
until you really know how to drive one, the first addition which I would advise is some driver training. There's no need to go to the expence of a "Land Rover Day", just find a LR or 4x4 club near you and learn from them. Most are quite knowledgeable and willing to help but beware of those who "talk a good game".
After that, selection of the right type of tyre for your needs (don't ask; don't ever ask) will ensure that your Disco will go almost anywhere.

Thanks for that. I'm based in derby so I'm lucky to have the Peak District 30 miles or so away from me. If there is any one around that area that is part of a 4x4 group or knows of someone, if you let me know that would be brilliant. Would love to go out with people who have experience, and know proper greenlanning roads.

Make sure the chassi has not rusted away:rolleyes:

My first disco was a 96 standard. Did the job well for towing horses, etc. was a bit of a rot box though so cost me a lot of money over the years (I can't do mechanical stuff, I have to pay someone else)

My D2 is far better though and a lot less to maintain in that way. Purchase price was way more so swings and roundabouts.

Get someone familiar with early Discoverys to look at it before buying or at the very least search LZ Discovery section for buying advice.. grippy tyres will give you more than enough off-road capability at this stage.. they're brilliant cars for both laning & towing.. enjoy! :)
