ok, i finally got the SM out. took it apart on the dinner table earlier, it looks fooked.

hands up those who have taken apart a starter motor?
hands up those who know a fooked one from a salvagable one?

the seals look like they have gone and there is some surface rust and some deeper patches. take a look at the pics.

tell me what you think (be interested in what you think ormus and slob)

ah think yer piccies are great. check yer brushes then get hold of a multi meter. hav eyou got a good vice securely mounted to a sturdy bench?
 
one of yer brushs looks ****ed and you need to measure the resistance of the big lumpy bit
 
which one? do you mean them square things at the bottom? will buy a meter tomorrow and test it. if i cant get replacement seals i might invest in a new one. the old ones have completely perished which is why i guess there is loads of corrosion. cant find any seals on ebay. cheers for now slob. will let you know more tomorrow.
 
aye the square things wiff springs on them, they need to be a min. length which i can't recall at the moment and unlikely to wiff out getting me book. but you are clued up you have yor own book you can look in
 
i dont think they look too bad from the piccy, but it needs a really good clean up.

ive seen worse and they still half work.

whats the solonoid like?
 
min length is 8mm and they look over that. solonoid is good, the bore and spring were caked in mud but no rust.

im more worried about the armature not having good enough conductivity after i get rid of the rust, also do you know if these units are meant to be completely sealed from water/mud. cos all my rubber seals have perished and i would have to get new ones from somewhere... any idea where? parts for these things are bloody hard to find!

anyone know any good sources for reconditioned units at a reasonable price?

just get it cleaned up and tested for now.
you can always seal it with silicone afterwards.
spares are a nightmare for stuff like this. only the reconditioners seem to have a supply.
 
cheers for your help ormus and slob. after hours of cleaning and light lube (GT85), stuggling to get the brushes over the main part of the motor on re-assembly, seling with liquid gasket sealer thingy, struggling to hold it in place and get the bolts in, i finally managed to crank it over and it started!

it cranked over alot faster and fired quicker than when i bought it :)

so, for all you with starter problems, take it out and clean it 1st before spending £100 on a new starter when you dont need one :D simple.
