I own a similar model year TD6 to the one you’re looking at and agree with Steve’s comment above; that one key issue is whether the vehicle has had the front differential recall completed - If the LR service history is a little lacking (hence the filter issues?), then perhaps it has not been to a main dealer since the recall (which commenced for the TD6 model in late 2007 by my recollection) – Easy to see the difference if you know what you are looking for, the front drive shaft has a flexible joint to avoid excessive spline wear (which had some nasty, vehicle stranding consequences which I and other owners experienced first-hand). Your engineer should be able to help determine this one fairly easily and LR still has the recall in operation (I would hope) if it needs doing.

Also, gearbox – Any excessive drag when held on the foot brake in Drive? Clunking between shifts from P, to R, N, D etc,? Not sure of the mileage the vehicle you are looking at has covered, but I have just replaced the gearbox on mine (with LR replacement exchange) at 99,000 miles and feel it did well in comparison with some other owner’s reported experiences at much lower mileages. However, the replacement gearbox is exactly the same design I believe, so has the same inherent issue with internal degradation to look forward to (if your warranty covers it, then perhaps you can rest assured). Brake discs also needed replacing all round at the same time as the gearbox went on mine.

Can’t believe any dealer would try to sell the vehicle with fault codes showing – Does the suspension move between ride height options on demand from the rotary dash control and/or driver’s door mounted "exit" height switch, plus automatically dropping to motorway height on the move after a period at 65mph? Mine gives a fault code of “Suspension In-active” and locks in normal height (which is not so bad) when it has “issues.” I replaced the compressor a couple of years ago which has helped cure the problem, but it still hates humid, wet weather sometimes and can take a day to “dry out” and clear the above fault code and operate normally again it seems. I have never seen the fault code you've had reported.

Mine also had a battery issue, with a duff cell last year which left us stranded once, hence the need for an expensive battery replacement. I also had a windscreen replaced sometime back (due to cracking by a massive ice fall from a tree) and the surround has looked a little out of shape since (but no excessive noise resulted, which might be the cause of the noise issue with your potential vehicle). I have not seen any rust on the roof leading edge on mine and I thought (incorrectly it seems) that all the panels were aluminium anyway!

As said above, it is hard not to enjoy the car’s superb comfort over long distances and winter abilities (and the longer you own it and spend upon it, the more you feel you have to/want to keep it).

But the TD6 has the above diff and gearbox issues to consider - Trust your engineer/warranty cover can provide some reassurance on these, whichever TD6 you look at.

As for the gearbox, I didn't notice any of the symptoms you describe, however, as stated, I didn't really get to 'play with it' for very long. My engineer has reported that he feels that the gearbox was satisfactory and that there were no issues when using it in manual mode. He also reports that there was no evidence of oil leaks and that transmission vibration and noise levels were low.

I got to play with the suspension for a very short period of time and it seemed ok to me. Equally, the engineer reported no faults other than the CAN BUS FAULT. However, I spoke to the previous owner who has said that when he had it, it sometimes showed 'HDC INACTIVE'. But he usually rectified this by switching the car off and on again and it would be fine. I spoke to the previous servicing dealer and they told me a new compressor was fitted in May 2010. The fault code was given to him via an electronic diagnosis machine (of which I have no knowledge).

If I was buying this car from a private seller or dodgy back street garage then I wouldn't expect much of the above to be put right. However, this is a franchised dealer and I find it hard to believe that Land Rover would be happy with a vehicle being sold with some of the existing faults listed above. I expect a reasonable reply from the dealer telling me it'll be sorted (I know from previous BMW ownership, they were always quick to rectify any problems prior to sale).

I have replied to your PM. Never trust a dealer to fix anything properly on a car they want to shift, they will do the bare minimum to get it out the door and take your cash:eek:
 
A dealer will always look for the repair which least affects his margin. The rust spot on the roof puts me off without further problems. That would give me a hint to the previous keepers attitude to maintainance and the dealers preparation process. That and the fact that it has had a service but still has old filters. Plenty more to look at. ;)

Rob, I meant to say - I don't want to name and shame...yet!

There was no paperwork with the car other than the service book (not unusual though, as dealers are usually completely disinterested in it), which showed the last service being in 2008. However, a quick call to the previous servicing dealer showed that it was last serviced in March 2010 and then she reeled off a list of things that had been fixed on it including:

Air compressor
Park Heater
Front windscreen fitted after a large stone chip (probably related to the rust spot on the leading edge of the roof)
Boot leak
Track control arm
4 new tyres fitted in 2009 (with 4mm remaining)
Air conditioning fault fixed

She said that it looked as if they had re-built the vehicle! Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad! :confused:
 
If that much has gone wrong question why, what kind of life has it had and do you want a car which has had so many problems ?

It might be all good now and may stay good but as others have said you're better off getting one with full service history


I for one won't touch a car which doesn't have some sort of service history, my disco has full history dating back to its release from the showroom and my series has service history dating back to the 80's

More, useful history emerging thanks to your own research then (rather than the dealer’s presentation) – The previous ‘boot leak’ might need some further visual inspection. Try to find out where the leak actually occurred (spare wheel well, or somewhere else?). If it was on the (left) passenger side rear pillar (a known, possible weak spot I believe), then this can lead to corrosion of connectors on expensive electronics (mobile, sat nav, audio) in the rack behind the cover to the left of the boot area. Does any of this kit racking look rusty/units corroded/weak, corroded connectors likely to fail? If this was the problem area, the dealer might have previously fixed the leak (perhaps), but left the kit untouched and vulnerable. Needless to say, this is very expensive area to diagnose accurately/replace and with one unit’s failure, it takes the whole system off-line. I have not had this actually happen to mine, but had the Nokia unit (on top of the rack) fail shutting down the whole audio, sat nav system. At the time, I initially feared the worst upon researching possible causes, but thankfully no water leak was immediately evident (apart from where my dog had occasionally drooled through the vents above!) when I looked behind this boot cover. To my relief, the Nokia unit was diagnosed and replaced restoring all functionality, no other consequences have ensued. I now keep an eye on this area and regularly spray this kit area with WD40 in the vain attempt to ward off the effects of a potential leak, should it occur unnoticed.

I would expect the dealer to ‘try’ and fix all the faults you have identified before proceeding and I am amazed that this “LR Dealer” has not done so already, before marketing the vehicle (or am I just naïve, compared with others more sceptical/experienced on the forum? Probably yes). The suspension diagnosis fault code included, which I also have no direct knowledge of - But it might need explaining and “clearing down” by the dealer’s own diagnosis computer/technician, but why has it been left for a potential buyer to discover?

The front windscreen replacement might explain the noise if it is fitted badly and the leading edge chipping/rusting also caused during fitment as you say. Or, perhaps the vanes attached to the wiper arm are damaged and causing the reported air flow noise described (?) - I have had this happen on a previous VW vehicle.

Anyway, I admire your determination/tenacity to get all the history you can on the TD6 in question and regardless, it’s obviously building valuable knowledge for you of this vehicle/model.

I forgot to add - If you can, also check that the front windscreen heating elements (both sides) still work, as I was told when my windscreen was replaced, that it was difficult (for some fitters) to 'reliably' connect it back up again.

The previous owner seemed a bit shocked when I called (good old Google) but was quite helpful. In fact the dealer I called that used to service the vehicle was very helpful as well.

Like you Steve, I'm surprised the dealer isn't more helpful or that the vehicle was prepared to the standard advertised by Land Rover:

Umh - Not that I intend to/can afford it, but mine would not be offered for resale with even a Select LR Warranty then if I p/x'd it at a LR Dealer- Too many mile (it's now on 102,000 miles). Our Rangie is part of the family anyway (plus the investment made in keeping it in condition means it would be foolish to part with it).

Anyway, let me/us know how you get on with your search and this Dealer's eventual reponse and efforts to make you a potentially "happy customer."

For the extra you are spending by purchasing from a main stealer I would look for one elsewhere. £3000 is soon gone on components for these things.

Hello mate

As it stands the dealer has stated that they will repair/replace:


·Small rust spot on the roof's leading edge;

·Battery;

·Fault code in air suspension system (CAN BUS FAULT);

·Noise coming from lower central windscreen area;

·Security wheel nut adaptor;

·Securing clip for boot trim panel;

·Plastic cover for front towing hoop;

·They admitted that a service hadn't been carried out but have now stated that a service will be carried out including replacing oil and filter.


Initially they stated that they weren't going to fix the cigarette lighter fault. But i'd spoken to a LR main dealer and an independent specialist and they advised that whilst it could be a blown fuse, it could be the body control module which cost me in excess of £360!! The dealer has now said they will investigate that as well.

I'm supposed to be picking it up next Saturday (as long as everything is sorted)!

Well, you’ll be ready for the on-set of winter then when you pick-up your Rangie next Saturday – I trust the dealer will make great efforts with the rectification work/service and hope all goes well for you and your TD6 in the future.
