Hi guys,

I picked up my(96') rangie this afternoon from liverpool and although she's knocking on I must say I love it!For some reason I do like the sound of the 6cyl diesel.

Now for the reason I'm posting (there has to ba a catch lol).

Picked her up and after about a mile of driving uphill the temp gauge quickly rose to the red so pulled over and let her cool down. Had a look and the expasion tank was near enough empty so filled it with water (not ideal but the best I could do at the time).

Did another few miles then hit the motorway and doing a steady 60-65 the engine was overcooling, I could see the temp gauge moving down into the blue. I did another 30 odd miles like this and pulled into the services to check. Then the bonnet wouldn't open so elected to carry on.

Literally as I got off the services slip road the temp rose again so I pulled onto the hard shoulder and called the AA and got recovered the remainder 70 ish miles.

So, what does everyone think? From having a read through the forums I'm going to say either the thermostat or the waterpump (any part numbers for these?). I will do the prod the viscus fan with a rolled up paper tomorrow but I suspect that may be on it's way out too.

Currently downloading rave and would appreciate anyone's suggestions. Sorry for the long post :D and thanks for any help.

Sounds like you have already done some research...

Yes water pumps fail....the cheap ones gave a plastic impeller which works lose or breaks up. The better ones have a metal impeller.

Also check the Radiator, as these are top flow, they do get heavily silted at the bottom, restricting flow and efficiency. Get the engine warm and check the rad is hot all over.

Also in the Rad top header is a baffle plate, this directs the water flow coming in oneside the go down through the rad and back up to the other hose.....this little baffle has been known to break off allowing coolant to just flow across the top of the rad and not through the core hence no cooling effect!!
 
If it over cooled, it is unliekly to be the stat unless there was no water. I suspect the stat has been removed to disguise a problem. If you are lucky, it will be the water pump or RAD. Sadly the symptoms are typical of a cracked cylinder head. If you find the stat has been removed, you still have recourse even though it was a private sale as that would show the seller was dishonestly trying to hide a fault.

Don't you listen to these nasty people with their engines with too many cylinders. All that happens with those is that they go too fast and put your insurance costs up - when they get back to driving.

Unfortunately im with data on this
I think the heads gone and the seller knows this and removed the stat to hide it
You could give him a ring and explain that you belive he has deliberately misled you
But I think you might be best speaking to leagal assistance first
Did his advert say "sold as seen" or "good runner" or anything like that anywhere on it?

If the head was cracked it would be pressurising the coolant system. No mention of that. Over cooling is mostly likely missing stat. Needs a static test to check for leaks and a good coat of looking at before anything will be known for sure.

thanks for all the replies! To answer a few questions:

saint - Those are things that I'm going to have a look at, I'll also have a look at the viscus fan and see if that's locking up correctly.

gazza - I did, literally 10mins round the block, mostly down hill, nothing major reared it's head.

Data - When I managed to get the bonnet open there was nothing in the header tank, put around 3litres of water in (all I had at the time) and plodded on, only started to overcool once I was on the motorway. If it is the worst case scenario and it is the cylinder head, what are my options?
The guy said a hose had popped off at the bottom previously and sprayed coolant everywhere, but didn't happen to me on the way back. For reference, the blue cap is the windscreen washer fluid neck:

gfromleeds - it was sold as seen and spares or repair.

wammers - there was a little bit of presseure in as when I undid the expansion botlle lid there was a slight hiss, nothing major though.

right guys, bit of an update.

I've refilled it with coolant and properly burped it, there was quite a lot of air in there. I also noticed that when topped up and after about 2mins at 2500rpm the coolant went a distinct brown colour with like bits in, there were also like airbubbles (like a white froth) but they went as soon as it returned to idle.
I'm thinking it hasn't been changed for a while and possibly the rad is on it's way out?
The hose into the rad on the right hand side got quite warm but the left hand side was luke warm at the most, combined with the brown and bits could it be the baffle inside has gone?

Got warm air into the cabin (which i didn't get yesterday) and even though the hevac was set to HI I wouldn't say it was hot.

Did the newspaper trick on the viscous fan and it just chewed it up so am I right in thinking that's ok?

If it's the head, you can pick up second hand ones and i've seen new for £900.
Hose poping off suggests pressure. Duff viscous would cause the overheat. Overcooling will be the stat for sure.

Sounds like it's had RAD weld in it. did you test the viscous with the RAD good and hot? Does the RAD get hot all over?
 
yes I did. You could hear the viscous speed up and slow down as well the change in air flow. Just been out to have a look and considering it was up to temp and been off for around 15mins it's stone cold all over. The coolant pipes into the rad are still very warm. New rad?

I doubt if the baffle has gone.if that were the case I would expect both sides of the top of the RAD to be at the same temperature as the coolant would flow straight across the top.

I with Datatek as to the brown "bits".Sounds as if radweld or Barrs Leaks has been added to mask some issue with the cooling system.
 
the fact it has blown a pipe can only be system pressurising..i think also the system being low on water and probably no thermostat, really points to you being done......head gasket.
get it checked.

The RAD cores are very fine and easily blocked with RAD Weld. Centre baffle may also have gone. Trouble is if the previous owner has run it with regular overheats, I would put money on the head being cracked. HGF is not common. Still worth looking at the water pump, it may not be circulating, the impeller comes loos on the drive shaft.
Being sold as "Spares or repair" suggests the owner new it was fecked.
