Hi there,

Yesterday, I bought a '86 2.5 D N/A 110. It was bump-strated before I bought it so I knew it wasn't a goer...

I've never worked with a diesel engine before and never with a land rover. I have changed the battery but the thing won't start, it had been sat still for a couple of months before I bought it.

The engine turns over a couple of time then the starter motor begins to click.

What should I check next to try and get it started?

Thanks,

John.

Earth straps, I left my 90 for 2 months last year when I was in the US and the bugger wouldn't start, took the connection off the starter and sanded it down, got it all nice and clean, did the same to chassis strap and hey presto started first turn after that.

I would also do the main live connection to the starter if the earths don't do it.

Check the little wire (from the ignition) is getting a a good firm connection.

It could also be the starter is needing serviced. You can take it off strip it and clean it up and the chances are it will then work fine.

If it starts then clicks that sounds like bad connections - also clean up the battery clamps with a round file or bit of rounded sandpaper just to make sure your getting a connection there.

Oh and welcome to the nut house.

I guess we will be seeing a bit of you...

If all fails and it ends up being the starter, take it to a good auto electrician and they will rebuild it for you. I got an alt done for £20!!!!! Look down the back streets and little industrial estates there is bound to be a good one. Ask some little garages (sometimes they will get it done for you and don't change much as their cut).

Mind you only if you ask realy stupid questions like "Where does the windscreen washer water go" your going askng for it then, obviously it goes on the windows!

It doesn't in mine. It runs down my chassis. I got a hole in my bottle.:D :D :D

I had that on the disco, turned out it was the non return valve had sprung a leak and it was coming out there, but I had already stripped the thing off which involved an Mr A. Grinder to get it off the arch! Guh.
