I know.. but I will have 1 1/2 oil burners which might be almost as good as one proper landy..

I've been told this one aint going off road though..

There's nowt wrong with a Hippo, very comfy indeed too. Had absolutely no problems in the snow either.

What you need to seriously do is have a ride around in as many models as take your interest.
 
Yes I think that would be a wise move.
It will give me something to look forward to when I return from my holidays :D
 
Well Friday I went to get the disco and the freebie.. lots of dosh floating around and a finance deal but due to the way they were parked and the fact the good lady wanted a thorough test of the hippo I hadn't driven the disco so it all came down to the drive.. the guy told me it had already had a new clutch so I wasn't overly surprised it was a bit grabby although the missus thought it was pretty uncomfortable.. so heading down to a convenient place to swap drivers so her could drive it and it went bang.. turbo all over the road, smoke everywhere like it was on fire type bang..

Suffice it to say we didn't get either of them and are frantically trying to find the right motors now.. I'm still after a TD5 but not gonna do finance so it needs to be an older one.. her ladyship has completely gone of landrovers though and wants a proper convertible..

1 week till the tax on the ovlov runs out.. watch this space...

Given your predicament (tail-happy Z3 in the winter months - and, let me guess, the inability to transport anything bigger than a shopping bag?) a 90/Defender is the right tool for the job.

Came to the same conclusion myself after the last two winters and only a Merc SLK for transport.

To be frank, based on my experience, unless you're careful when you buy and plan on spending upwards £7k on the vehicle, paying for the tax disc in the window might be the least of your problems. Scan a few of the technical forums here and you can get a flavour of the repairs/challenges/fun you might face.

If you get serious and find something that looks like it fits the bill, I can recommend a good specialist who works out of Chipping Ongar. As well as being capable of complete re-builds (just completed a chassis transplant on my 90) he'll do pre-purchase inspections for a reasonable fee....
 
Go for a Defender. I bought my first one last week and I am loving it. For the last year I was driving about in a mk4 golf gti turbo slammed on coilovers but it just wasnt practical. Im finding the Defender much more fun to drive too!
 
You could even opt for a Range Rover.!? Bit more comfort? drive in style? Plus still retaining the offroad ability. Plenty of R-R p38's around, spares pretty cheap.
