Hi.
I have been reading posts on this forum for some time and finally got round to registering.
I am new to land rovers. My wife recently won a 1975 series 3 '88 landy.
Drove it home and to be honest was a bit of a shock! Loads of play in steering, no real brakes but when they work pull massively to one side and hard ride. But now I know all of which are normal to early land rovers.
More to worry is the knocking noise of the big ends clattering around at higher revs.
So I have ordered a manual for it to give me torque amounts and slowly start getting my hands dirty.

Ohh one question...... is there a search function other than the google search. Save me asking questions that have been asked lots of times...

Series brakes might not compare with modern but only in amount of effort required. Adjusted properly they with pull up straight and and are up to the job. My 2a will lock up on all 4 if I hit the stop pedal hard enough.

The same goes for the steering, it's just a matter of working through the system and adjusting/replacing worn components.

Hard ride you might have to live with but proper maintenance of the leafs makes a world of difference or replace with parabolics.

Thats ineresting. Thank you. The play In the steering is in the column to box. So just need to gain access and maybe adjust.
The brakes need to be looked at. And I am happy to live with suspention.

You say your wife won the Landy? What sort of competition did she enter? Or did she win it on ebay, or at an auction?
 
I was looking round this forum and clicked onto one of the ads - (famous four)
Really surprised on the prices for these old machines! Really cheap some of the parts! :)

Thanks. Its ok. The paint is not very good but not really that worryed about that at the moment. The line on the crank is a step. So got to have that slimmed. And I hear the snow is going to start falling around November time.... best pull my finger out.... :doh:
