I had a 530d touring a while back. I ended up spending £5k in 18 months of ownership on repairs and servicing, plus depreciation. That wasn't one of my best buys.

My Skoda cost me £9k in depreciation over 2 3/4 years, and sold it for £15k. So it retained 62.5% of its purchase price over that time. Quite reasonable compared to many new cars. When it was a year old I could have sold it for what I paid for it, as s/h vehicles were going for more than list due to the lead time.

To be fair, the FL's have a high resale value and 60% for 3 yr old not unusual. Your Skoda was costing you £3000 per year so by that account, my £2450 per year deprecation on my last FL was good in comparison.

My maths is way off, was a. Rough night last night :)

I bought it in march so just after the white months when they are pretty cheap. Sold it just before the snow last year when prices peak.

Before me it was one disabled woman who owned it. Needed it to fit a Wheelchair in. Was pristine.

Right so it would have been about 10Yr old when you sold it. £3.5k was a good whack of money for it even allowing for the it still being somewhat below average milage @ 8000 per year. You done good.

I had a lot of offers for it. A few poor ones sub £3k but then two buyers offered £3.5k. Went to the first guy who turned up with cash.

Very happy. Gearbox fault wasn't a big deal, would just slip now and then but perfectly drivable.

I've been watching Freelander 2 prices for a while to see what they're like. I noticed them rise too. I guess it's down to supply and demand. LR have enjoyed a huge amount of publicity and sales have risen. Recent figure of 25% increase is down to the Evoque. There's a lot of trade in's from peeps with bigger LR's buying the FL2 instead. I assume it's down to price and the economy. Evoque and FL2 sales are still on a waiting list basis so the second hand market has reacted. FL2 is much betterer than the FL1 on average reliability and driving experience. Hence prices are still high for second hand examples. That may price us out for a while but it is a luxury vehicle from a premium brand.

I think you're right. My dad bought a new FL2 this year and I couldn't believe how much it cost him. But saying that, a 2005 FL1 would have cost me the best part £24k when I priced it up with the options I wanted back then, so I declined. I guess the FL2 has more toys than the FL1 did but I do feel that LR has shifted too far upmarket and away from their grass roots- pun fully intended. But then I guess any farmer with sense would buy a Jap pickup anyway...

Prices going up is exactly the same as with Discovery. After a couple of years the prices just started to rise dramatically. Freelander filled the gap vacated. Its taken longer with the Freelander - probably because FL1 wasn't such a good car, but its happening now with FL2. So expect something to fill the gap!

Define "good"

In the same way as a Suzuki Jimny is probably a 'good' car, but not so 'good' as a Freelander, hence the Freelander costs more (new).

The Freelander wasn't 'good' enough to hike its price up until recently.

Maybe the Disco was 'underpriced' when released because I'm sure prices started rising dramatically before the end of the D1s because it was good enough to sell at those prices.

My dad sold his FL2 a couple of years ago, bought an X5, and lost £17k in 18 months in depreciation and finance payments, and bought his old FL2 back again, difference between what he got in trade for it and what he bought it back for was barely £5k in 18 months!
