Have had FL's for years, base TD4 S, get them new and usually change them every three years. Just coming up for a change now - current model TD4 S is 1st March 2011.

Made a few enquiries with dealers and seems the cost to change this time is heavy - much more than I have paid to change previously - straight swap for another TD4 S. I've only got 35000 miles on mine.

However, I'm thinking the cost to change is too much for me this time.

Are Landy pricing themselves out of it - or have the got so popular that Landy is upping the costs and raking it in? That said, got a letter from the dealer that services mine and they are trying to buy in models such as mine for cash. Apparently they are thin on the ground.

What's going on? :)

It's the exact reason I'm buying another used TD4 rather than financing a new FL2. prices have gone beyond reasonable. They are nice cars, but aren't supposed to be Land Rovers premium product. I'd rather by a FL1 and have some money in my bank to put things right than be stretched to the limit with one of these new ones.

Talk is the FL2 is on the way out to be replaced by a baby discovery (Like the Evoque with the RR). Whether that's just a rebadged FL2 or a completely different car we will have to see. Between discontinuing the FL & the defender as we know it they will price all normal Landy owners out of the market. It will just be the wealthy idiots buying the new ones & us enthusiasts keeping everything else on the road.

Great shame.

It was test driving an FL2, and working put what it would cost per month on finance, that made me change my mind and look for one of the last FL1's. No regrets.

I miss my Yeti, for its speed and economy, but not the repayments. I am really enjoying the FL1. I don't drive it fast anyway. The FL1 is way more comfortable and it is almost sorted out now. Just a few more bits & pieces to do.

And to be honest I'm much more comfortable owning my car as an asset rather than always making payments. Maybe a little old fashioned but I'm loathe to owe anyone anything.

Last time I changed from an O8 to 11 plate - exactly three years old it was £7400 to change. Given that I would have needed to pay around £1000 to keep the 08 (tyres, service, mot, discs, pads etc) it made it a good deal for three years to buy new again.

This time effectively the same deal but they are looking for nearly £11K to change!!

I'm not mechanical so any work needed I'm at the mercy of the dealer which is why new with warranty etc usually best option for me.

I do like the FL and not a thing wrong with my current model but I've not got money to throw away. The new model is due early 2015 I'm told so not sure how that will affect the current FL2's.

For £7400 you can get 3 decent FL1s or 1 FL1 and have about 5k left for maintenance.
Should get 3 years out of it plus change!

It does depend on what year you buy though...... When I was looking at 2006 FL1's, they were in the range of £4000 to £9500!!!

I've looked at some used prices and 07 FL2's are anything from £12000 up!!!

£9500 for a 06 FL1 might be an exception but not a good deal for sure.

I've worked out that buying a 3 yr Old FL and taking into account its depreciation and either ongoing warranty or maintenance will cost nearly as much as my £7400 change for new after 3 years and having a new FL to boot.

My last Freelander was a 52 plate td4 automatic. 35k on the clock. £4200. Spent around £2000 on repairs and maintenance including mot and insurance over 4 years including gearbox work. Sold it 4 years on for £3.5k with a gearbox issue and 80k on the clock. Would have got what I paid without gearbox probs.

So 4 years motoring in a landy cost me £3.7k. I'm happy with that if I'm honest.

FL2 under £9k

I had a 530d touring a while back. I ended up spending £5k in 18 months of ownership on repairs and servicing, plus depreciation. That wasn't one of my best buys.

My Skoda cost me £9k in depreciation over 2 3/4 years, and sold it for £15k. So it retained 62.5% of its purchase price over that time. Quite reasonable compared to many new cars. When it was a year old I could have sold it for what I paid for it, as s/h vehicles were going for more than list due to the lead time.

why not buy a 90 day old one from stealer, all the warranty etc and possibly only a 1000 miles on the clock.

I think you got your sums wrong = by my reckoning your 4 years only cost you to £2.7k!! So you can be even happier :)

That said, without knowing the times involved and thus relative values, but if it was recent and you got £3.5k for an 11 Yr old Landy with gearbox problems then that's exceptional. By the same token at 35K on the clock for what would have been a 7 yr old FL is equally exceptional - roughly 5K per year so presumably one owner.

Have looked at that previously and have bought one or two cars on that basis. Last time I checked on FL's the discount they were giving was not worth it for what would be a two owner car. However, I'll check it out again.

My maths is way off, was a. Rough night last night :)

I bought it in march so just after the white months when they are pretty cheap. Sold it just before the snow last year when prices peak.

Before me it was one disabled woman who owned it. Needed it to fit a Wheelchair in. Was pristine.
