i have fitted new diesel pump and i cant get the system to prime itself . i took the tray out . (under rear arch ) made sure new filter went in right direction . its a brand new bosch pump i bought . the pump is buzzing away , i even took the tray back out filled the sedimenter with fuel replaced everything and it still wont start . i disconnected the battery which is also brand new . any help on getting the system to prime itself please . or have i been stupin and forgot something.

looks like i tried to start it too early and leaving the pump to do its work (turn key and leave pump running till it stops 3 or 4 times ) will i be able to repeat the priming process or am i now at another stage of the priming process that needs to be done first .

You don't say whether you fitted a new filter as well - but it should make no difference to the method.

Turn the ignition key to get the dash-lights on but dont try to start yet.

The pump will run and buzz/whirr but dont try to start yet.

You might hear all sorts of gurgling and liquid noises - but that's normal.

After a couple of minutes the pump will stop.

Turn off the ignition and wait for 2 minutes.

Repeat the above another twice before you actually try to start the engine.

It might stall immediately - in which case repeat the above another twice.

If it runs rough - just let it idle until it clears itself.

sorry yes new filter fitted as well . made sure it was flowing the right way .

battery went ok not recoded radio yet .rear window went down . works fine . central locking and alarm work fine .

When I change my filter I usually plug the pipe as I remove it from the filter, empty sedimenter, change filter, then put a length of pipe from the filter to a container, switch on ignition and wait for the fuel to fill everything and start to fill the container.
That way I don't push all that air in the sedimenter / filter etc around the fuel system.. just my method as diesels can be a bugger sometimes.. although the Freelander does seem pretty friendly, as it will let the pump run and prime itself, my dam Audi wont!!
