The Defender has evolved from the original Land Rover launched in 1948, it's boxy shape is instantly recognisable, like the old Volvo's it's never been a fashionable style so it's never gone out of fashion.:)

The new Defender by contrast is, like the Evoque, just another version of the Gaylander 2 with a new frock. Supposedly it's front wheel drive with selectable 4 wheel drive, it's a styling exercise that will be out of fashion in less than 5 years.:(

There will be no need for snorkals, it's so stuffed with electronics that it sure won't go that deep. The wing mirrors have cameras to activate the automatic terrain response, little or no driver skill needed, beware of mud flicking up onto the camera lens! It's also got sonar built into the green oval to check the water depth, don't want all the electronics getting wet do we?:eek:

I can't see, the military, coast guard, mountain rescue or farmers fannying about in one TBH. Can they really afford to say goodbye to all those sales?
It's interesting to note that the current Defender is LR's top selling vehicle in France, since the development costs must have been amortised years ago it should also be one of the most profitable.

The new Defender will not even be made in the UK, apparently it will be made in India, might be better to buy a Mahindra!

LR is now just another car maker, albeit of overpriced cars for poseurs.

Rant over!

Wouldn't be so bad if they launched the 'DC100' but carried on producing the current Defender alongside it, Everyone would be happy then. And It would prove which was the most popular! :)

I have to say its not the style change or the multitude of electronics that bother me - its the front wheel drive. To me this speaks louder than anything else. It says streets not tracks and focuses on the inexperienced rather than the needful.
Maybe people said the same when the P38 replaced the classic. Maybe I am just getting old...:-(

Perhaps production of the current Defender will be moved to India for Country's that are not restricted by EU rules such as pedestrian safety and side impact protection.
If that happened would you be allowed to import one into the UK ?
Just a thought.

What's all this crap about pedestrian safety? The front of a Defender looks no more dangerous than the front of an L322 and certainly a lot less dangerous than the front of a Renault Magnum truck for example, it's just an excuse.

Last time I looked roads were for vehicles and footpaths were for pedestrians. We will all be driving round with sofas strapped to the front of cars to scoop up all these folks meandering in the road.

You've not seen the EU proposal for an airbag that pops out in front of the windscreen to protect the head of pedestrians when you mow them down then?

If they bring out rules like that how the hells Deathrace going to become a reality??

And they want every car fitted with a breathaliser that disables starting until you have blown into it and are below the limit:rolleyes: Guess it's always possible to do a Huhne and get the wife to stay sober and blow while the **** artist drives. That possibility seems to have escaped the brains in the EU:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Totally agree, bloody stupid EU rules are ruining everything. About time we told Europe BOLLOCKS.
