a big head wind. some bumpy dusty roads. And the clutch is dead.

160km from the capital astana. will get a tow tomorrow. think there is a landy garage there. everything closed for the weekend though.

dont suppose anyone knows a friendly LR defender owner in kazakhstan who could advise me of a reliable mech.

not really expecting any solutions just wanting to feel proactive.

start taking the prop off and get the GBox ready for removal? any idea on parts to fly in if needed? just a plate or is it good practice to change seals, springs etc.

the adventure continues.
 
Its a gearbox off job, so replace as much as you can while in there, (full (quality) clutch and release bearing and arm) if a garage is doing the work, let them do it all, removing the prop won't save them much time…I understand the need to feel proactive though…..

defo clutch. driving along and thought head wind was really picking up as struggling to get above 45 in 5th. then slowly over an hour speed dropped down but revs stayed good. then the smell. wow. stopped and checked under. smoke coming from bellhousing drain hole. peddle feels normal and clutch res is good. defo melted plate.

worried it might have been oil leaking from engine somehow as i did just renew engine oil a day ago.

whats the ultimate shopping list then. dont mind having spares. plate. fork. etc? dont want to do this more than once and i have visa timings aswell so only a chance to order in one airdrop.
 
Don't forget the little bits - what are generally called Slipper Pads x 2 and the the bent clip which retains the release bearing. Not sure what Defender you have so can't advise further on these.
 
Whether it's engine or gearbox out will depend on what equipment is available,if all there is is a trolly jack and a couple of strong blokes then it can be done by first removing transfer box and then the gearbox can be moved back.Not ideal and care needed but if needs must. Good luck.
 
it turns out people in kazkhstan could not be more helpful. got towed 250km to astana over some **** road. LR dealership here has said they cant help as they know nothing about old models. some nice guy who spoke english found a mechanic who says he knows the 300tdi and opens monday. and someone is turning up at 9am to tow me to the garage. amazing.

will get the gearbox off and will order bits over the phone from craddocks or somewhere. any advice on which make? will get seals and springs and the lot.
