Hi all, my s3 has gone and in its place is a 1990 rrc 3.9 vogue auto. I have always wanted a v8 so there we go. Funny looking underneath and seeing coil springs and fancy suspension stuff : )
It has a couple of issues like the speedoand odometer stops registering after 5 mins driving and i have to do the heater resistor plus rusty rear wing obviously ;)

She ran great on the motorway; she wanders a bit but compared to my series, she was luxury!
anyway, hello
cheers

The wandering can be the result of several factors, including tyre wear, slop in ball joints or steering box, or poor alignment. Tyres larger than stock diameter can also cause it.

Don't know your car's mileage but speedo problems in general are common on RRC's once the 100k has passed. Rust, rust & more rust are the Classic's biggest downfall, especially from '89 onwards (the year the Disco was launched) due to the (alleged) use of lower grade steel for the shell. Well maintained though the Classic is just that, a lovely thing to drive, especially the V8, with a style that never dates.

Yes, I have been there with a Disco and rust, rust and more rust. I made sure this one was sound before buying and to be fair, its pretty good. The rear arch has a small hole which I will weld up at some point. Tailgate is a bit crusty on the edges but fine. Apart from that it appears solid. So I'm really happy with that.

With the speedo, I've tried to work out if its cable or electronic? Does anyone know which it is on a vogue SE 1990 (August registered)? The fact it drops out after a few minuted driving suggests some sort of heat issue but I am far from being sure. I need to get under her and take a look at things.

She is lovely to drive and I the difference with my series is night and day (I know you can't compare them as they are completely different things).

It even did 25mpg on the motorway! Not that we care about such things :D

If it is hotwire injection then it will be electronic speedo. The senders do play up. When the speed transducer drops out the EFI warning light will come on, there will be poor idle as the ECU won't know if the car is moving or not and so it doesn't know if idle stabilisation should be on or off.

The transducer is attached to the inside of the nearside chassis rail, should be tucked up behind a small heatshield, short speedo cable connects it to the transfer box. Easy enough to undo the speedo cable from the transducer, then undo mountings, unplug it and remove.

I did open up a transducer once but couldn't see why it had failed, so got a used one off fleabay - new replacements are silly expensive.
