Well the bottom will be cooler than the top, the function of the RAD is too cool but the question is how much cooler? How hot is the outlet hose on the battery side of the RAD?

Ok rad on top is roasting
The rest of the rad is cold
Hose on battery side is lukewarm
Hose on other side is extremely got

The nissens I had did indeed have a baffle, doesn’t necessarily mean yours does, missed in manufacturing, sent wrong one there’s many reasons. Usually we do Wammers test - turn it upside down and try to roll a marble through the top before fitting - the baffle will stop it.
You could perhaps pull a pipe off and try poke something down there to feel for one?
Other thing is air lock. I’d done it a few times just like a normal car with no issues, then one time something was wrong and I couldn’t work out what. Turned out to be air stuck in there somehow. It came out when I revved it a little with cap off while having FR wheel up on few blocks to raise it. TY @Datatek
One place air tends to get stuck in a p38D is thermostat if you changed it - OE has a valve on it (fitted at 12oclock position) for this reason, many aftermarket ones don’t, some people fit anyway no issues, I just drilled my own little hole. If you changed it without a valve a good burping on that pipe once thermostat is fully open could likely clear it.

If the outlet is cool rather than hot, sounds like the baffle is there but you have an airlock. No hole in the top of the thermostat will cause problems. I always put the front of the car on ramps when refilling as it's easier to get the air out.
Hey Keith, does your two have the down and under bleed pipe that goes beneath the battery tray?
I replaced the down and under type for a rubber tube that goes around the battery and directly to the coolant tank. Far less bother bleeding after that

I removed the thermostat and ran the vehicle
Rad is now warm all over
I left the coolant cap slightly loose.. no overheating and rad hoses are not hard..
Drove 30 minutes No over heating
sniff test done and confirms gas leak…
..
Hopefully just the head gasket and not crack in the head. These heads are fragile unfortunately.
If it's just the gasket that'sore hopeful.
There are that say the head can't be skimmed but there are also those that say it's possible but it depends on the condition of the surface and measurements relatiing to the valves.
