Now had a better look at this and the halfshaft is actually coming through the driving member

Indeed not - they sound pretty worn
Might be worth replacing the Drive Members as well as they too could have worn

Just had the same problem on my second day of owning the landy. Did that fix the problem? i know this topic is from 2012 but any help would be greatly appreciated.

circlip stops it pushing in, not falling out, the drivemember and splines on the shaft do that. cap is to stop muck.

The splines on the shaft should not be able to come out through the drive flange.
If you look at it logically, the circlip is there to prevent the shaft from going too far into the axle tube ... it doesn't stop it from coming out!
As far as the cap is concerned, I always fill mine with greas as that helps to lubricate the spline as it moves in the flange.
It sounds as though you really ought to renew both the flange and shafts on both sides. I would also replace the circlips and caps as well.
An easy job that should only take about 10 minutes each side.
