Does anyone know if a civilian universal towing hitch will work on a sankey army trailer or will it only couple with the NATO jaw?

As far as i no the universal civi hitch is smaller than the army nato.
If you intend to tow a army nato trailer i would advise that you tow it using the correct hitch.
Its not your life at risk if the trailor comes off your car its the person who it MAY run in to .
It is also not advisable incase of such a acident what would your insurance company say ??

None taken....
They are heavy trailers and i don't want to be responsible for an accident!
Don't suppose you know of anywhere i can get a decent hook without paying through the nose?
Also... I have a standard adjustable towing plate on the back of my Disco. Now I know the Shankey's are high, do you think this set on its highest position will suffice?

re hight i would think if you set the hitch as hi as it goes you will have no probs at all.
my hitch on my 90 is slightly lower than i needed so i changed the 16" sanky wheels for some 15" ones and it corrected the hight difference.
ps the hole centres on a STANDARD hitch and a NATO hitch are diff so you may need to redrill your adjustment plate to sute

Sorry for the late reply! Sankeys usually have the NATO ring. This is made of steel bar one and one half inches thick. Inside diameter (the eye hole) is three inches. Outside diameter six inches. Pretty much all the two-bolt towing jaws at the farm supplies shop won't fit. It is possible to weld a short length of 3" pipe onto a steel plate and have a 50mm coupling on the plate. Another plate and bolts can be used to clamp the top plate onto the ring. This works extremely well, much better than crude farm-made jaws which give a lot of lash and embarrass the towing vehicle. By the way the Sankey ring swivels so a non-swivelling jaw is just fine. Some proper Nato jaws swivel and can cope easily with non swivelling rings but these are a costly specialist item. Eventually I obtained a precision machined 2 bolt fitting Nato non-swivelling jaw - extremely good and no rattling. Brilliant for doing rubbish runs to the tip, saves fortunes in not needing skips. By the way all this Euro blah only applies to post 1998 vehicles. (have you noticed that 50mm towballs same as they ever were, now have little type approval stickers?) If one has a 1999 onwards vehicle and the type approval sticker comes off in the rain???????
