Right, I've got the inlet manifold off the 96, there are 2 sensors. The front one is orange, the middle one is green and there is a blanking plug to the rear near the sixth glowplug.
On the 2000, there are 3 sensors, the third being where the blanking plug is on the 96, can't tell you the colours as I would have to get the manifold off and the car is in use. All 3 go into the water jacket on the head.
There are differences between early and late BECM's which may account for the change of sensors. The thermocouple A to D chip I used on one of my designs went out of production so I had to change the sensor and the chip.
I reckon you have the wrong sensor from an earlier engine.

Thanks Keith, this is very useful info.
I am stuck under other folks cars this morning, but in the afternoon i will pull the manifold off and check again.
I reckon you may be correct about the earlier or other manufacturers sensor.
I did have to re-order the oil filter for mine as the RR one has too small a center hole in it and ended up with the filter listed for the BMW 525 tds.
So possibly my gauge sender is still the BMW one and not compatible with the range set in the RR BECM

Frankenrangie strikes again.:)

Well done lads seem to be making progress. But what is the other sensor for on the 2000 model it's not listed on the 2000 component revision. Unless it came in later that year for 2001 cars.

It's certainly odd, can't see why it would need 3 sensors. Have yet to identify them in RAVE.
Mines a late (November) 2000 car so could be a 2001 spec.:)
 
Still not had a chance to get the manifold off guys,sorry,been caught up with broken vauxhalls and fords all day :p

Is there any way you can see the colour of the gauge sensor at the front of your car through the manifold gaps Keith?
Sorry to be a pain in the arse,but if i knew for sure the senor on yours was blue,that would let me know to order the same.
If not,i will have my manifold off in the morning and will try the potentiometer in place dialled down and the read what the nano says the BECM is getting.

Have you tried the nano with a warm engine Keith?
Just curious how far the numbers drop from 255 on a working system.

Had a look at a couple of sites and this chap here looks exactly like the one fitted to my car at the mo.
Just can't find any info on resistance on this or the blue one from RR.

Maybe they did away with the one clipped to the matrix feed pipe and fitted it to the engine. There were wiring changes for 2001 the fuse box is different for a start, with some relays having different functions. There are three fuse boxes for the doozel 94-98, 99-01 and 01-02.

I don't have my own Nano, I have a Faultmate but the software is the same. The value in the BECM screen drops as the temperature rises, also the rate of drop is not linear.

It's impossible to see the colour of the sensor without removing the connector and my hands are too big to get in there without taking the manifold off.
Personally I would just go to a stealer with your VIN and ask.

Just had a nice talk with guy from Shields LR in Glasgow.

Turns out there are 3 sensors as Keith said on this year car.
1. at rear of engine-nearest g/box = stc2254 black aircon
2.middle one of the 3 =stc2299 green edc
3.nearest front =nsc100820 blue temp gauge.

Result :clap2:.
This chase might be coming to an end, mibbe ;)

Right so as i said earlier they have discontinued the sensor clipped on the matrix feed for the aircon and fitted it to the engine for 2001 models. Result.

Maybe or maybe not, I can see a sensor clipped on the heater matrix pipe as well:confused:

Well Keith if you can, then i don't know. We need a 2001 wiring diagram i do not have one. There is certainly no engine mounted sensor for the aircon on the 2000 revision. Maybe the extra sensor is just a comparator for the aircon. Think after all that has been discussed a blue sensor stuck in may prove effective. :)
 
Data,wammers, you guys have been brilliant with this problem.
It's been a long road to get to this point ,but i have learned loads about my car in the process and would like to say thank you very much for getting me through the electrical minefield that is the p38.

Will report back when the new sensor arrives and gets fitted.

PS. just for ref. i also have a clipped on sensor at the matrix but as you said wammers, it looks nowt like the one in the pic.

According to BMW TIS, the third sensor appearing in later models is to fire up the condensor fans in the event of engine overheat instead of just relying on the air con high pressure switch. Dunno if they used it for the same reason in the rangies.

Been out and had the manifold off again,and indeed i have 3 sensors.
rear one is black,good. Middle one is green,good.Front one is black ,same as the rear one.Blue one on order.

Still something weird going on.Had the nano plugged in,potentiometer in place of sensor.Checked and set it at 2.4 k ohms through multimeter.

no gauge movement,and with nano on EDC reading 134 degrees and overheat triangle comes on but BECM still shows 236.
In fairness, no matter where i dial the pot. edc always read 134 ,so i wont take it as read!

Will see where we are with new sensor.
