Guys

I have an annoying noise on my 'fender (1986 110SW with a Disco 200 Tdi engine). Basically, every so often there's an annoying, slightly rattling, resonating noise that sounds pretty much exactly like a didgeridoo. Usually caused by being in too high a gear, usually 4th on a hill, however I'm not labouring the engine and the Tdi's torque would easily pull it along.

I thought it was exhaust related, however I have just fitted a full Steve Parker system including downpipe, as far as I can see the exhaust is not catching the chassis anywhere, and it did it with the old exhaust too.

Any ideas?

Engine/gearbox contacting chassis somewhere, could be a collapsed engine or gearbox mount.
Perhaps an air induction to engine tract problem, have a friend with a Tojo Hilux with snorkle fitted, that makes a bit of a hum at certain revs, never thought of it as a "didgeridoo" though, being as we live among the masters of that instrument here better watch out they don't nick the old 'Lux!

As you say it's possibly strain related, what is the condition of your engine and gearbox mounts?

Thanks guys. Don't think it's an engine or box mount, they are all present and correct from what I can see. And there's too much "resonance" for that...I'd expect that to be much more of a banging noise. Can't be induction either...at the same time I fitted the nex exhaust I fitted the pukka Steve Parker intake kit plus snorkel, so that is new everything right up to the turbo...and again it did it with the old induction system on too.

I usually find annoying noises and whines come from the passenger seat personally

Nah, can't be the passenger seat. It's not a squeal or annoying drone or a constant grating noise, and try as I might I can't ignore it, tune out, la-la-la over the top of it or simply drown it out with the radio. Interestingly, I managed to fix all that by fitting a switch to the dashboard that turns on the newly fitted heated leather seat, and the grating squeal and drone and "brrrrrrrrr...bloody Land Rovers" noise instantly turned into a "oooooo, mmmmmm" which was far better.

Check for a loose belt or belts .. it might be bouncing and resonating ...
