Does anyone maybe know what is that thing marked in yellow and what should it be connected to?

I have owned my car for a year now and i still havent found out what that is.
Engine is running smoothly and everything is completely normal.

It is a 2005 Freelander TD4 (facelift 5dr) 62000 miles.

Should i connect it to anything?
Or should it simply hang there in engine bay?

I did wonder. Thought it should have the open end pointing down.

It should hang down towards the turbo hose

don't matter where the open end points to
as long as it's not sucking in water or excessive grime
'n if it does .. it'll simply have to be replaced sooner
