hi,
I have a W reg Land Rover Discovery TD5 (Auto) and it keeps overheating on long (ish) journeys. It does roughly 50 miles then overheats and pours water out of the pressure cap, I have changed the pressure cap and the thermostat. I guess the water is circulating properly because i have heat inside the car when the car is revving, but when stationary for a while, it starts to blow through cold. I have also fitted a new power steering pump, but do these cars have problems with the Water Pump? the car can run for hours without the pressure cap on outside. Theres no signs of oil in the water and no smoke coming out of the exhaust. Can you help, or give me advice of what to do next?

Could be partially blocked radiator.....check for cold spots but that doesn't really explain heater going cold??

Don't know the set up on a TD5 but could be water pump running slow ie loose belt :confused:

Sounds like the water pump to me. Does the fan have any play or do you see any water dribbling out of the bottom of the pump? Any strange noises while the engine is running?
 
my old mondeo td did the same it turned out to be head leaking exhaust gases into water system. Hopes its not the same for you

I have taken the viscus fan off the rad and the whole thing heats up, no cold spots so it can't be that, and the Fan belt is tensioned right up so it can't be that either. Thanks for the suggestions though.
 
make sure that the tank's cap is fully/strongly tightened ...cos if it's not it does what u said...happened to me
 
then when the engine is up on normal working temp remove the cap and see if u get a clean flow back to the tank from the return pipe

Your coolant system is pressurising, this is usually a good sign of a blown head gasket.

There are two things I suggest you try:

1. Check to see that there are no airlocks in the coolant system by opening the plastic bleed screw in the top hose, top up the header tank until coolant comes from the bleed hole, then replace the bleed screw.

2. Take the car to a garage and ask them to use a 'sniffer' in the coolant tank to see if there are any exhaust gases - if there are, your head gasket has blow and needs replacing.
 
sounds like head gasket or cracked head to me. Depending on how bad and where the HG or head has failed it may not show up with a sniffer test at all or you may need to hold the tester over the expansion tank for a long time.

My TD5 passed several sniff tests. The coolant system would only pressurise when driven.

Does sound like the head gasket as said above get a sniff test done to see if there are exhaust gasses in the water.
 
Sounds familiar.
Mine had a head gasket failure. It started off just using a little bit of water.
A few thousand miles later it would only work if the header tank was half empty.
At this stage is passed a sniff test,
Ran it for a year (20K) like this before it got worse and started overheating randomly.
It failed a sniff test at this point and I had it fixed.

If there is pressure inside the header tank in the morning when it has cooled down this
has come from HG or crack leaking into coolant.
