Had a strange series of events this evening with my classic.

Drove up to Northampton today (2 and a half hours each way).

When I got there, I loaded the RR up, and went to start it....nothing. tried again, nothing. THOUGHT I saw a whisp of smoke come out from under the bonnet.

Poked around under the bonnet, all looked OK (Brand New Starter Motor), then decided to mess about with the gear lever (Autobox), and it started. Assumed that I just hadn't got it in park properly and went home.

Got home, thought I''d try it again, this time it turned over no problem but the starter wouldn't stop!!! Turned the engine off and took the key out but the starter was still spinning!! Jumped out, and pulled the 12v switched feed off the starter and it stopped.

I'm guessing it could be a stuck relay, but I can't think of anything else. I don't think its the ignition switch, because the immobiliser cuts the starter feed from the ignition, and with the immobiliser active I still have 12v at the starter.

Anybody had this before??

Can anybody tell me where the starter relay is??

I thought solenoid, but if it was that then wouldn't the motor keep spinning after I pulled the switched ignition lead off????

Yep it would. You should only have 12 volts to solenoid with ignition in start position. What year is your motor?

It's still turning the engine, bendix is still engaged. As soon as I pull the small red wire off the spade connection on the solenoid everything stops.

I've been out with the multi-meter and with the keys out of the ignition I still have 12volts on the small wire that should be on the spade connector.

I think either a relay is stuck assuming there is one or the immobiliser has crapped itself.

OK that narrows it down then. Favorite would be relay stuck shut. There is a starter relay. If you remove cover in engine bay you will see a bank of five relays the starter relay is the second one from the left.

Didn't have the multi meter with me so didn't check it again.

I'll look tomorrow.

If you heard a click as you pulled the earth it maybe that your ignition switch has shorted out and is constantly supplying the relay. The click may have been the relay dropping out. Let me know what you find.
