Hi All,

I bought a 09 reg Freelander 2 from Stratstones 4 weeks ago and since we started a road trip to France have found multiple problems with the car. These include:

1) Breaking down at the side of the road when the engine management system prevented both the radiator and air con fans from working so we boiled and the car shut down. THe car has since recovered but we dont know the cause of the problem.
2) The R/N/S wheel bearing is going - Land Rover in Avignon say it should get us home despite a dreadful droning noise
3) Only half the heated windscreen works
4) One of the fobs has packed up and no longer locks /unlocks the car
5)The door seals are coming away from the car
6) Before we left for france I had Kwik Fit carry out a free break check and they told me it needed urgent pads on the front and advisory replacement on the rear.

The car has only covered 28K and we are extremley disappoined in the brand. Is it reasonable to expect all these items to be replaced / repaired under warranty? I am very tempted to just chuck it in for Volvo when we get home......assuming it makes it that far.

Any advice on how to tackle Stratones and whether it is worth pursuing with this car would be most welcome

Hi the faults on your FL2 can occur on any brand of motor nowadays .have word with the garage first and as far as i know theres a few VOLVO parts in the FL2 ! hope you get it sorted .
 
I think you are right it is discharged but it looses the charge very quickly.....took the car to Bristol (120 miles) before we came away - it locked the car whilst we dropped my daughter off at uni but had no charge to unlock it 2 hours later so had to use the blade. I am hoping as its only two years old it will be replaced under warrenty.

More concerned about getting home from here- got to drive from Avignon to Milton Keynes next saturday with no chance of getting the wheel bearing replaced before we leave so the european recovery team have oferred either risk it or leave the car here to be re -covered and faff around with rental cars. I am going for the risk it option, its about 800 miles plus a bit of running around before we leave. At the moment it is just humming away - getting louder but still just a hum, very noticeable at around 30 mph but gets a little quieter at 65 / 70. No play in the wheel yet. Would others take the same choice - local LR dealer seems quite confident we will make it !!!! Thats always assuming the cooloing fans carry on working and we dont over heat and grind to a halt again first.

I would risk the whhel bearing ,even if it just gets you back to the uk then it would save some hassle regarding breakdown ,i'd try to get some sort of written confirmation from Landrover Avignon about it being ok just to help with any warranty claims ,then take it back and demand the work being carried out and loan vehicle whilst it's being done ,or get your money back or exchange vehicle if you have lost faith in present car.
Never trust what kwik fit tell you ,in my opinion biggest cowboys on the high street .Get second opinion when you take car back to dealer tell them what kwik fit said and ask them to either show you no fault or repair it.
 
Sorry that you've been having such a bad time with your Freelander.

You might have an issue with the dealer and you certainly have an issue with the dodgy used example you've got lumbered with, but I wouldn't let it put you off the brand.

Buying used from a dealer almost inevitably means that you know very little about the history of the car and it might have led a very hard life.
 
The problem is with this quickfit places they are terrible for knocking parts if your brake pads are 40%worn they will say that youve only got 1000 miles left in them also watch them for twisting brake pipes and not doing your wheels up to the correct manufacter setting with a tourqe wrench iv had quite a few cars come in with this situation

Mike's got a very good point there. I hadn't clocked the fact that it was Kwik Fit!
 
your lucky ! I piad nearly 30K for a brand new auto FR2 too date its had too many faults to list and its taken 2 dealers over 2.5 years to find out what was causing a severe hesitation only to find out it was pulling away in 2nd gear and not 1st !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mines had soo many bits and so many lost trips away with the caravan I'm gutted but worse is the fact that having written to L/R customer services they havent had the courtesy to even acknowledge the letter ! Bad Bad Bad. Make sure you chase the dealer 100%. I would be very concerned over an over heated engine !!!!. The fan speed controller will be whats failed. I had two of those as well and mine packed up in france when it was 3 weeks old.

in answer to above they all pull away in 2nd in road use, in answer to the original post surely stratstones put a 12 month unlimited warranty on the vehicle, but you will have to be persistent, not rude.

They dont pull away in 2nd ! only if you select the manual mode!!!
that was the frightening bit was establishing what gear they should pull away in and the dealer got an auto out to check !!!!!!! as no one really seemed to know !
My MPG went from 26-overall and 29 best to 37 mpg and 42.2 on a long run !!!!!!
just goes to show 2nd gear isnt best for pulling away.
Mine goes like a rocket now, it was like having it chipped !I belive the 2nd gear was caused by loads of engine fault codes logged due to very poor earth and the engine going into reduced power mode on start up !
 
MMMM to finish our story LR assistance had to recover our Freelander in the south of france when the wheel bearing collapsed. To their credit Stratstone bought the car back at the price paid (but did not refund the cost of the new break pads which were necessary after only 400 miles) and we are now the owners of an Audi A6 Sportsline Estate. Never ever will we have another LandRover, a flawed product, the worst car by far we have ever owned.
 
Far too much wrong with it....faulty door fob, door seals coming away. heated front screen faulty, air con not working, radiator fan fan not working, collapsed wheel bearing in only 5 weeks to ever ever consider a Land Rover again and we paid £22k for the privilege !!!!!
 
Most of the problems you have listed should have been picked up by the dealer before it was even offered for sale!!! You cannot blame the brand for a shoddy dealer or apathetic 1st owner! Brakes/bearings and recovery should've been covered by the dealer on just basic sale of goods act let alone their sale warranty and everything else by the manufacturers warranty. Anyone else reading this should note that its not worth writing to customer services if you've got an issue...ring them!!! You will then be allocated a case number and a a customer service rep who will follow the case to completion and you will more than likely get a little something out of them (free service) once the issue has been solved. Good luck with your Audi...friend of mine is currently taking them to court as his dmf failed and set on fire, this was after a 1500 turbo and 1700 abs modulator on a 38 month old 'bulletproof' car.....
 
Audi/ vw brilliant, my next door vermin has got a beetle that uses over a litre of oil every 1k, they told him it's cos its a high preformance injin.....what a load of bollocks. Hes now on what they call oil watch...whats the odds they drag this out until the warranty expires and then tell him to swivel.
ffs once out of fiisrt gear i leave his hitler mobile for dead...hgih performance ...not! , a Audi mechanic we know who rides wuth us says its a commom fault....but they wont admit it!
