Afternoon,

Finally have use of a garage which is great! However last weekend I parked up in the garage to change the rear trailing arm bushes and when we where finished there was some oil on the garage floor. Now I know Defenders do leak but should it be this much?

Worth bearing in mind that the transfer box intermediate seal was changed in December, after that near enough no leaks until I noticed the below on the weekend.

I havnt managed to check the oil levels yet but I should have some time to do so tomorrow after work.

Heres pics -

That appeared between 11am & 6pm after a 30 min drive.

And where it was all coming from -

My front axle also appears to be 'wet' with oil but no noticeable change in engine oil levels, PAS Box is leaking but very very slowly (6 months not had to top up). Oil is also at the top coming down so I doubt it is diff oil. Rear of the engine block is also very oily. Fuel pressure reg not leaking.

Any help/conclusions on this would be great

Hmm. Looks like several different leaks to me. There seems to be some getting out between the two parts of the primary gearbox - between the alloy and the iron ingot. Plus something shedding from the transfer box, possibly getting out past the sump plate. Forward of that, I have something similar at the front end, moistening my track rod and anti roll bar that seems to be coming from the fuel pressure regulator, But if yours is dry, it might be the seal round the rocker cover. The sump of the transfer box shouldn't be too hard to sort out. If the leak from the main gearbox isn't severe I would be tempted to leave it because it's a much bigger job separating the two parts of the gearbox.

Thanks!

Ill clean off the sump plate see if thats it hopefully it is

Rocker cover seems dry everywhere but the rear but unsure if thats where the oil is leaving from, would have thought id notice a drop in engine oil with how 'wet' my axle is!

Ideally i'd prefer to leave it, likely hood is ill fix it and it will just bloody leak again!

There's a little half moon bit on the rocker cover seal at the very back that seems to be the culprit on mine sometimes. It needs a smear of gasket sealant on assembly to keep it oil tight.

Went out today 30 mins motorway driving left the 90 for 3 hours and a large puddle of oil beneath.

Checked levels GB is perfect
Tx Box has lost a little but not loads

Most of the oil appears to be coming from the top of the GB but no oil lost from it?

Also sprayed brake cleaner and jet washed the underside and placed a baking tray so I can see how much oil im loosing. From a cold engine, then tomorrow ill go for a drive and park on top see whats what

This was left after a drive to warm everything up

Still cant ID the source so im having Gigglepin take a look.

It's a clever design by Land Rover. It slowly leaks out and you slowly top it up. So you have a constant supply of fresh oils going in.

Hav u check fuel reg they can leak fuel and wash down oil to make it look like an oil leak

Took it to Gigglepin. Every seal was leaking :/ all replaced!

Drove for a few hours got home still leaking

So they will be doing it again.

Update.

The front output shaft flange was damaged causing the seal not to sit properly.

Fixed for free :D

Thanks chaps
