hi, fitted new mud shields to my series 3 , what do you use to protect the bulkhead/footwell below the mud shield , would mud flaps do the job or maybe extend the mud shield.
 
I sprayed with clear Bilt & Hamber Dynax. It sets a little like candle wax and provides an extra layer over the paint. I find it useful on many Land Rover areas.

I've thought about covering with something but it's easy to create a dirt trap that you can't clean. Did you fit spacers where the mud shield bolts to the bottom of the footwell to allow leaves / debris to drain through?

Half a tractor tyre nailed under the arch'll do the trick. Other than that you can sit and listen to the rot eating your bulkhead on still nights. :eek:
 
Could take a sharp knife next time you visit the supermarket and do a bit of 'pick your own' conveyor belt at the till. :)
 
Discussed this recently. The standard mud shields are as you say badly designed, really badly. They are there to protect the heater, clutch, brake etc assembles but don't protect the bottom of the bulkhead. I use Waxyol under body seal. It's an area that gets battered with crud and I redo the treatment regularly having recently replaced the footwells. It's a design flaw that could be fixed if you fabricated an extension plate. It could easily be fixed onto the floor screws. Surprised nobody has come up with a fixing.

Yes you would have thought they would have come up with a better idea by now , I think I'll get some plate and have a go.
 
I just used some rubber belt trapping it behind the bolts that hold the mud shield in place and hanging down far enough to prevent the crud from hitting the footwell or landing on the outrigger.
 
No mate,but I set mine up much like the defender set up which you can see on Gwyn Lewis 4x4 site.
