I've been pricing some mtf94 gearbox oil up, I've got two Td5's to do and a 300 tdi the cheapest I've found is Smith and Alan which is about 45 pound for 10 litres, has anyone used this or is their another brand I should be looking at.
 
bought MTF94 last year from L/R main dealer ,cost over £34 for enough to do mine, I will be looking at smith and allen when I need more oils, their products have good write ups.

Yeah it was about double to get it from a main dealer, its just that I've never heard of smith and Allen oil and was hoping someone had used it. :)
 
Just had a look at smith and Allan web site they do have MTF 94 I have never been able to get it from Texaco outlets.
 
i have used smith & alan for all my oils for years they are suppliers to shell and they have been excellent and alot cheaper than anywhere else.

You won't a Texaco MTF94 is exclusive Land Rover and Rover when they were around. If you do find it elseware it in the "grey" market. :)
 
That's very cheap. I just paid over £7 a litre, plus vat, from a local 4x4 specialist. They were the only place local that could supply it.
 
That's bloody odd I went to an auto factor and he prescribed my R380 box on a disco with comma AQM. I told him its MTF94 & he said you can use this too (he done a search & it came up on his screen). Well iv had it in at least 6 months now and it's running very smooth. Have I potentially fooked & shortened my box life?
 
my 300tdi 110, handbook states ATF and that's what I'e always used in 90TD All the discos I've owned and now in this 110. Never had any problems with any of the gearboxes at all??
 
I'm not sure on this one, they used to use ATF in the R380, then they changed to MTF94, they are both similar viscosities and obviously gear oils...

No one has ever been able to tell me for certain which is better, I know it needs to be the thinner stuff because of the oil pump in them. I know my Disco which was originally my dads and was always maintained by a LR indy till I bought it had ATF in it and has done about 145,000. I changed to MTF94 as that's what I had as I'd filled my brand new R380 in my 90 with it.

Comma are oil blenders so thay have blended an MTF oil with similar properties to Texaco/Land Rover MTF94 and their brand name AQM all the oil companies do a MTF now.

Read the spec on this one for example.

Even I know the story of when the R380 was introduced, LR service departments were told the oil to use is MTF.. but LR forgot to alter the manuals and handbooks so they still stated ATF. LR saw the light with the D2 and now state in the manuals and books MTF94

Even if Rover/Land Rover use Texaco oil in their vehicles when they leave the factory that dosen't mean that you have to use Texaco oil, I know my LR main dealer uses Castrol when servicing vehicles.

Yep, it's a rover/Honda thing.

Proper genuine MTF94 is available I from Honda for about 12 quid a litre, used to out it in the Type R box or it would properly spit it's dummy/gears out.

Now I am able to get it elsewhere, euro car parts for instance sell their own brand triple qx 75w90 iirc but it is the special blend for rover/Honda/BMW mini etc etc.

Tempted to use it in my LT77 but have never been brave enough to try!

Plus it's dearer than ATF and my gearbox doesn't instill me with enough trust to warrant putting expensive oil in which I might be draining out again the next day!! :D
