We had a Disco TDi 200 manual for a few years and she would give us 36mpg all day long, over 40 on a run (55-60mph) and a best ever of 47.7mpg.

She was very well maintained, new oils and filters regularly, synthetic gear oils etc etc

I just checked mine out, my Tdi300 is returning 33 mpg, just after a jet cleaner was run through. this is just running to and from work, a 20mile run. will be checking a long run in a couple of weeks.

At a constant 56mph on a flat road without a headwind etc etc you probably are getting that kind of mpg. Unfortunately in the real world how often can you actually drive at the most economical speed, using minimal throttle etc. Plus you must have had to accelerate through the gears to get there in the first place. Figures like that are meaningless in the real world.

How are you working out m.p.g. I fill tank till pump clicks off twice.Check when come to refill same pump if possible.Last trip back from Cornwall 71.34 litres used for 372 miles.Divide 71.34 by 4.54 to convert to gallons gives 15.7.Divide 372 miles by 15.7 gives 23.6 m.p.g.[towing caravan with four bikes on roof.]

Worked mine out also coming back from Kernow, 27mpg.. but the Disco was stuffed to the gills with the roof rack piled up and not really sticking to the most economical speeds.

95 300 TDI, Bristol Torquay and back, one way loaded with tools the other empty returned 37 mpg quite happy with that :) speed on motorway between 60-65

Well after reading my book for 3.9 V8 EFI with Cats i should return 27mpg at a speed of 56mph!

I worked out with a mix of driving town country and upto 85mph I'm returning 17-19MPG

Anyone know how hard it is to convert a V-8 gas Discovery to a TDI? I have been considering making this swap someday when my engine gets tired.

BoB is yo man for that. He has either completed or is in the process of doing precisely that.

You wouldn't want the reduced power and noise and all the other diesel 'things', especially the TDi ones.

We did Rushden, Northants to Inverness and John O'Groats last week, just under 1500 miles, comes out at an average of 19mpg, there was a lot of local single-track driving and A-roads when we were up there, came back fairly quickly, gas all the way except for about £20 quids worth of petrol.

Not bad for a high-speed V8-powered brick! :D
