Tis all true. I tryed to hire a dolly when I bought me craped out series Landy and every where I rang said nope! I ended up with a flat bed trailer which I winched the series onto and it had an over run braking system on it. If you dont know what an over run braking system is look at the a frame of a caravan. Concertina bit behind the tow hitch. You brake trailer catches up with you squashing the concertina bit in and it pulls a linkage attached to the trailers brakes. Ta dar! Simple int it. Oh arrrr almost forgot. I got 23mpg (300tdi) with 1.5 ton and that was with leaky spill off pipes which I discovered when I got where I was goin. The big give away was the smell of diesel and the pool of diesel under it.

Listen to what Ratty is saying, I couldn't have put it better myself and would take great joy in nailing you for towing like that if you were up this way.
Do yourself a huge big favour and hire a trailer suitable for the purpose, it doesn't cost a lot and a damn sight better than the grief you will get if caught on a dolly.
You know it makes sense!

I have a ring coupling recovery A frame WITH over run brakes. It gets VOSA every time. They pull me over, give me the waffle about how they are illegal. I ask them the hows and whys. They tell me all about unbraked trailers over 750kg........and then I point at the brakes. They then gets all confused looking and starts nosing around the casualty vehicle. I always get the ' I haven't seen one like that before' spiel.

Would make a good POLICE CAMERA ACTION episode tho watching you escaping thro fields whilst towing I know what you mean Trew you see them things the size of a fecking coach with a little smart car dangeling off the back. Do they weigh less than 750kgs???

ALL illegal. The vehicle MUST be broken down to use it. It must also weigh less than 750kg to be exempt from the braking regs.

I've seen a few of these lately with coupled brakes from the tow vehicle to the car, don't know the full workings of it but VOSA guys have let them go! I remain sceptical.

Basically. YES.
Last year when the recovery regs changed vosa went on the rampage. they nicked myself and several of my colleagues for spec lifting vehicles cos the casualty vehicle weighs more than 750kg. It took 6 months of argueing and point blank refusal to recover ANY vehicle they had condemned to get them to see the light. Even now a lot of my colleagues will not spec a vehicle more than a few miles. I don't have a problem with it cos I know of the ins and outs. It still causes me grief when I have to spend hours talking VOSA through the law though cos they don't know it. If you don't know the full ins and outs do not attempt to use anything other than a trailer.

A spec lift is much much safer but due to VOSA 'thinking' they know the law I often have to use my A frame instead to avoid prosecution.

I know exactly what you mean Ratty.
Had roadside checks done by VOSA when in my truck and very few know the ins and outs of the law.
No disrespect to Bluestrobe but I once encountered a copper once who had no idea what a tachograph was and his more senior colleague had no idea how to read the markings on it!
It should not be down to the driver to explain points of road transport law that VOSA or the Police should be properly trained to know anyway.
