I have a 2006 DT6 Sport. Can anyone explain what I could expect the increase in MPG to be if I were to not use the Heater/Ventilation system over say a journey of 100 miles of mixed urban/motorway use? and how exactly does using the Heater/Ventilation use more diesel. I will in the future be towing a light weight caravan if that makes any difference?

the heat from the heater is waste heat from the engine that would otherwise be dissipated to the outside air by the radiater behind thegrill at the front of the car....hence not using the interior heater causes the environment to warm up and ultimatly drowns polar bears , you are using electicityto run the fans for both heating and forced air ventilation which ultimatly comes from your diesel. if you consult your owners manual and google you canuse the wattage of the fan ,the calorific value of diesel and the conversion efficiency of your engine/generator/battery andcable losses to calculate the effect on mpg of running the fan..... or youcould install a solar panal to help chargethe battery so the engine doest have to.... which in theory could result is a fuel saving, terribly sorry you will have to do this research and calculations yourself cos i just dont have the time, even for such a worthwhile task.

if you have a family there is no such thing asa light weight caravan, by the time the missus has loaded all the toiletries essential for a night away and the kids have loaded their x boxes and play stations you will be approaching your legal max train weight. you will find this has a detremental effect on your nought to sixty times and youre mpg will plumet i suspect given the driving style appropriate to the intelligence of the question it may even reach single figures.

though ive out linned the theory of calculating effects on mpg i do feelt here are so many unknown variables that an empirical approach might be best.. ie suck it and see..

But the use of electricity by the heater fan will be offset by the saving of electricity from the radiator fan which will not have to work so hard!
In practice I think the additional fuel consumption of using heating and ventilation over a 100 mile run would be unmeasurable. AC is another matter, though.
But towing a caravan....... can you fit extra tanks in it?

in my limited experience the radiator fan is either belt driven, or leccy that never actually turns on

Hmmmm,

I was told of an very rearly used fuel saving device,
one thats frowned upon by oil companies worldwide.

if you have a builders merchants near your abode,
go in and ask for 1 (single digit)
ordinary common building brick.
this needs to be placed between the foot operated vehicle motion pedal and the tripple layered sound deadning covering that emcompases the general floor areas under the above quoted foot operated motion pedal.

this causes a limited reaction of dynamic movement between the above quoted foot operated motion pedal,
and its maximun motional movement when depressed to its pre set makers requirements.

hence a more user friendly consumed fuel allowance per preplanned travel plan,
thus resulting in driving like a fanny for about 100 miles!

the engine fan is both belt driven and electric operated. Just turn the A/C off and drive as normal. if that's not enough get a smaller tow motor.

To OP: If you're worried about how much fuel you'll burn by running heating/towing. You can't afford to run a Landy. Please return your keys to the nearest dealer and get something else. Such as a push bike.

To be anally concerned about the mpg effect, of having a car heater on has, means you really will NOT like any Landrover.
